[Jo Bailey, AP evidence, 6.3.1986]
Ridge and furrow visible in saltmarsh.
[Field visit F. Basford, R. Loader, 22.7.1999 (coastal audit)]
NTSMR no.122930
Ridge and furrow in area of marshland, aligned NW-SE. Historic documents describe the area as pasture, sot eh ridge and furrow must have been created within a limited period when land hunger was acute, possibly in the 13th century.
Recommendations. This area has reverted to saltmarsh following the breach of the sea wall in the 1950s. This site will gradually disappear unless the area is reclaimed. However, rebuilding the sea wall would probably conflict with nature interests, and would only be a temporary measure in light of predicted sea level rises. It is not recommended that it is attempted, and the area should be left to nature for the present.

[Jo Bailey, AP evidence, 6.3.1986]
Ridge and furrow not visible in long grass.
[Field visit F. Basford, R. Loader, 22.7.1999 (coastal audit)]
NTSMR 122901
N-S ridge and furrow visible on air photograph 6-3-86; no longer visible in long grass during visit by Frank Basford in July 1999. The site was referred to as Newtown Marsh in early documents, but Green Close from the 18th century. During the phase that it was known as the Marsh it appears to have been used as pasture, so the ridge and furrow phase ought to have either been medieval or post-1700; the latter is unlikely.
Recommendations: This field should not be ploughed under any circumstances, otherwise the earthworks will be destroyed. A pasture land use should be maintained, and written into any future leases.

Ridge and furrow not visible in long grass.
[Field visit F. Basford, R. Loader, 22.7.1999 (coastal audit)]
NTSMR 122902
Ridge and furrow observed form air photographs of 10-3-86 but obscured by long grass when visited by Frank Basford in July 1999. As with the previous site [IWSMR 1728], the presence of ridge and furrow here is odd as the area was part of Newtown Common before 1700, and was used as common pasture. The ridge and furrow probably pre-dates this usage, suggesting that common fields reverted to common pasture as the town shrank.
Recommendations: This field should not be ploughed under any circumstances, otherwise the earthworks will be destroyed. A pasture land use should be maintained, and written into any future leases.

Description: N-S ridge and furrow filling one field and east half of neighbouring field to north, just east of Town Hall and Noah's Ark.
[Jo Bailey, AP evidence, 10.3.1986.]
NTSMR no 122903
Ridge and furrow earthworks identified by air photograph. Earlier status of this land is unclear, but the Town Common Field existed within this land block until about 1700. There are clear ridge and furrow earthworks in the field to the north (plot 4657: NTSMR no 122999), overlying site of house plots, but the earthworks in this field (plot 4550) were not easily visible from the ground.
Recommendations: This field should not be ploughed under any circumstances, otherwise the earthworks will be destroyed. A pasture land use should be maintained, and written into any future leases.
Also NTSMR no.122999
The County SMR states that the field to the south contains ridge and furrow, but this was not visible on the ground (see NTSMR no.122903). It states that the R & F extends into 'east half of neighbouring field to the north'. However, observations on the ground found it extending right across this northern field (plot 4657). The earthworks here were clearly visible while those in the field to the south could not be clearly made out. It is considered that NTSMR no. 122903 refers, mainly, to the southern field, and that a separate number is required for this largely newly identified block, particularly as it overlies the site of possible house plots.
There are earthworks in this block of fields. They were known as part of Harts and Rogers alias Kents in 176. Between Anleys and Noah's Ark the field contains ridge and furrow earthworks. There ads 12 ridges about 4m apart between the western hedge and a point in line with the end of the Noah's Ark garden. The centres of the furrows were measured at approximately 7m, 12m, 16m, 20m, 24m, 28m, 32m, 36m, 40m, 44m, 49m, and 53m from the western hedge. There is then a wide gap, almost a low causeway, until the furrows start again at 68m from the western hedge. This seems to mark an access way (or possible narrow plot) between a gate in the hedge by the High Street site and the field to the south. From 68m the ridge and furrow starts again, but more degraded than to the west. The approximate centres of the furrows are at 68m, 77m, 80m, 84m, 92m, 96m, 100m and 104m. The eastern fence of this block is at 123m, but between 104m and 123m the earthworks become too degraded to make any real sense of them. The earthworks show ridge and furrow extending right up to the High Street just a little to the east of the town's centre.
This latter point is of some interest. If these are ridge and furrow, then they seem to indicate that the town south of the High Street and east of the Town Hall, was largely abandoned at a fairly early date. It is suspected that the eastern part of the town was never properly filled up even at the height of the town's prosperity, and all settlement may have concentrated west of the Town Hall in better proximity to the quay, a situation still largely reflected today.
Recommendations: These earthworks are gradually eroding through stock pasturing. It is recommended that a measured survey of all the earthworks in the town is made as soon as finances allow, and that large hoofed animals such as cattle and horses are kept off earthworks where possible.

ID (Preferred Ref.): 2702

Map Sheet: SZ38SE
Grid Reference: SZ 3928 8280 (point) Google map
Summary: Very slight traces of ridge and furrow
Description: Area containing ridge and furrow, now barely visible as earthworks. 3.5m-4.0m in width (from crest to crest). C. 0.1m high. Orientation 020 degrees. The area defined by measuring using GPS was SZ 39283 82807 (the cliff face) - SZ 39291 82820 - SZ 39375 82819 - SZ 39370 82772 (the cliff face).
A narrow field to the north of this area may have previously contained ridge and furrow. Ridge and furrow could not be identified within this field or adjacent fields.
The ridge and furrow may have extended further to the west. However, this area is subject to land movement due to coastal erosion, and poaching by cattle, making it difficult to identify any surviving ridge and furrow.
[Field visit, F. Basford, R. Loader, 17.8.1998 (coastal audit)]
Ridge and furrow visible on aerial photograph.
[Aerofilms 97C/787 Environment Agency Beach Monitoring 23.7.97 Run 89, 3200 (Aerial photographs on loan from the Environment Agency)]
NTSMR no. 128568
County SMR records ridge and furrow earthworks 'barely visible' about 4m wide and o.1m high during field visit of August 1998. It was further confirmed from air photos taken for the Environment Agency by Aerofilms in July 1997.
Field visit by this recorder noted about three low banks in the area indicated. Unlike the county record he was unable to confirm they were ridge and furrow as they were not all on the same alignment. However, the tithe map for Shalfleet indicates that a small open field comprising about 12-15 strips survived here at this date. This had been enclosed by 1862. From the alignment of the strips shown on that map, it is considered that the banks seen on this occasion were dividing baulks or headlands between some of the strips shown. However it is not impossible that there was ridge and furrow within these headlands that was more visible during previous visits by the IOWAC staff. The light was poor during the later field visit.
The late survival of open fields on the Isle of Wight seems to have been quite rare, and this is an interesting example of a small open field belonging to the small sub-manor of Hulverstone. There is some evidence of relict strips within the later enclosed fields of southern Mottistone on a map of c 1815.
Recommendations: This area is currently subject to severe erosion, with collapses of the cliff face recorded during fieldwork. The cliff top should be monitored regularly for general erosion, and for archaeological finds eroding from the cliff face. Ideally this needs to be done on a monthly basis at present. Part of the path to the east of this site had actually collapsed into the sea, and will require the fence line to be altered to compensate.
Only part of the area formerly part of the open field is still under pasture, other areas have recently been ploughed. Stock poaching is also causing severe damage to these low and fragile earthworks. It is recommended that some further work is done to establish how rare or valuable such earthworks are on the island. The management should consult the IOWAC on this. It is possible that a formal survey of the earthworks might be undertaken before they are further damaged.
The earthworks were so faint on the last field visit that it was not practical to make a reliable sketch survey.

Description: Ridge and furrow earthworks recorded throughout the lower coastal part of Knowles Farm by the County SMR. GPS references are given for overall area. Also claimed to be able to see them on air photographs. N-S alignment in field south of track west from Knowles Farm, 2.4m wide, 30cm high.
Visit by C K Currie in the company of the Property Manager, Tony Tutton, failed to locate any ridge and furrow earthworks here (although it can be seen on a photograph taken by the author on a later visit, despite not being seen on the ground). The ground here is very uneven due to land slippage. There are outcrops of rock and steep depressions all over this land. 19th-century surveys record it as 'arable and pasture' indicating that only the flatter areas may have been ploughed.
It is possible that this is very faint ridge and furrow that might only be visible in certain light conditions. This can be seen from the above photograph [in report]. The author took the photograph of the track and remains of the drystone wall, but did not notice the ridge and furrow until after the photograph was developed.
Management recommendations: The area is currently under grassland and in view of its archaeological potential should remain so. These earthworks are possibly part of a larger overall spread of sites on or near St Catherine's Head. These need to be assessed as part of an overall research strategy for this property.

Description: East-west running ridge and furrow noted on the north side of the path running from Knowles Farm to Watershoot Bay. Approximately 2 metres from crest to crest, c.20cm high. The western end of this block of ridge and furrow has been lost through natural slumping.
The extent of ridge and furrow visible on the ground was plotted using GPS. Corners at:

NTSMR no: 122865
Description: Ridge and furrow earthworks recorded throughout the lower coastal part of Knowles Farm by the County SMR. GPS references are given for the overall area. Also claimed to be able to see them on air photographs. E-W alignment on north side of path running from Knowles Farm.
Visit by C K Currie in the company of the Property Manager, Tony Tutton, failed to locate any ridge and furrow earthworks here. The ground here is very uneven due to land slippage. There are outcrops of rock and steep depressions all over this land. 19th-century surveys record it as 'arable and pasture' indicating that only the flatter areas may have been ploughed
Management recommendations: The area is currently under grassland and in view of its archaeological potential should remain so. These earthworks are possibly part of a larger overall spread of sites on or near St Catherine's Head. These need to be assessed as part of an overall research strategy for this property

Remains of ridge and furrow noted in eroding saltmarsh.
[Field visit F. Basford, 28.7.1999 (coastal audit)]
NTSMR no. 122951
Twelve instances of ridge and furrow are recorded within the flooded marshland called Newtown Marsh to the north of the old town. These are visible from air photos taken by Meridian Airmaps Ltd on 13th August 1983 (nos 20/83 39.20 83 084) and were seen on loan from the Environment Agency by the IOWCAC. Most of the earthworks are still visible, but, since the breaching of the sea wall in the 1950s, are within inaccessible marshland. Alignments are either SW-NE or NW-SE.
It is not known when these earthworks were formed. In the post-medieval times, the area is reasonably well documented as rough pasture. This suggests that the earthworks are possibly medieval. If this is the case, the land may have been reclaimed in the 13th century in association with the founding of the town, only to be abandoned to saltmarsh and rough pasture later.
Recommendations: There is very little that can be done since the earthworks are largely inaccessible since the breaching of the sea wall. The site should be monitored regularly for deterioration, and all development in the area blocked.

Summary: Ridge and furrow noted in small clearing on 1999 aerial photograph, but not seen on 1969 aerial photographs, Due to its sharp appearance, might not be very old
Description: The area was visited as a result of noting ridge and furrow in a small clearing within scrub and woodland on an aerial photograph taken on 15 June 1999.
Narrow ridge and furrow - straight, on a roughly north-south alignment. The ridges are 2.0m apart from crest to crest and up to 0.3m high. The furrows are narrow and relatively deep.
These earthworks are not visible on aerial photographs at 1:2500 scale taken by the Ordnance Survey in 1969. Due to their sharp appearance they may be of recent date.
The ridges are confined to the clearing and do not apparently extend into the surrounding woodland.
Within the woodland to the south of this area the remains of ridge and furrow is barely discernable where there is no understorey. The ridges here are 2.5m in width and up to 0.1m high and are on an east-west alignment.

Summary: Prehistoric tree clearance, flint scatter, ancient springline containing flint and medieval ridge and furrow
Description: Site 3: Prehistoric tree clearance, flint scatter, ancient springline containing flint and medieval ridge and furrow.
Thinly distributed tree and scrub clearance pits, often containing fire-cracked flint, were found beneath ridge and furrow cultivation…
Medieval ridge and furrow indicates the continued agricultural use of this landscape from the prehistoric period onwards.

Summary: Ridge and furrow and gullies
Description: Site 4: Ridge and furrow and gullies.
North to south aligned ridge and furrow earthworks, probably of medieval date, and a series of undated linear gullies were recorded within this field.
Discussion
Remnant ridge and furrow was recorded in several fields in the vicinity of Plot 5, suggesting that this area was extensively cultivated during the medieval period. The function and date of the linear features recorded at site 4 cannot be determined with any certainty. The similar nature of gullies 1332 and 1324, and their location suggest that they are contemporary and associated. The relationship of these with Gully 1321 could not be determined, although the similarity of the fills may suggest that these features are broadly contemporary.
The lack of artefacts, with the exception of the single sherd of pottery recovered from fill 1322, suggests that there was no settlement site in the immediate vicinity. It therefore seems more likely that these gullies are of agricultural origin, possibly representing former field boundaries or drainage ditches. The sherd of pottery is very abraded. It may have been deposited here as a result of manuring and cannot be used to date Gully 1321.
The features recorded during the watching brief do not correlate with the geophysical anomalies, suggesting that these were caused by geological disturbances.

Summary: Ridge and furrow
Description: Site 5: Ridge and furrow.
Remnants of ridge and furrow, probably of medieval date, were recovered…
Discussion
North to south aligned ridge and furrow was recorded in plot 0/4 (1306) and 0/5 (1307) suggesting that the surrounding area was under cultivation during the medieval period. A small quantity of fragmented tile was visible within these linear features, but no datable evidence was recovered. It is assumed that this ridge and furrow is broadly medieval in date.
