Through 'Visual Confectionery' I have spent a large part of the past two years working on visuals for club nights. As yet i haven't taken my work further than Derby but who knows what the future holds?
Recently I have been doing a lot of visuals for Off The Hook, arguably the best hip hop/ funk/ turntablism night in Derby (@Unity). The visuals I use for Off the Hook tend to be graphical using animation and clear, simple images. I project a loop which I have created and am constantly adding to which plays off VHS. In addition to which I mix in randomly accessible graphics from a computer. At present I use two programs; a sound activated program which moves to the music and one which just plays loops. A live camera positioned on the decks provides an additional source and is mixed into the visuals via a video mixer. The final mix is projected onto screens at either side of the stage. I have supplied the same formula for Off the Hook events forming part of the Katapult and Technique nights at the Gatehouse, Derby.
On a slightly different note I have also done visuals at the somewhat smaller UPRAW and Formula nights at the Courtyard. I feel the sound activated computer program tends to be more effective for

these dance orientated nights (drum & bass and break beat). The faster pace of music tends to work better with the program creating a more aesthetically pleasing visual.
I think that when you put a night on you need to consider the club's interior. Certain venues can be sparsely decorated but with the addition of visuals the atmosphere can be dramatically improved. The visuals might not attract the crowds, but they may help bring them back!
A recent addition to the visuals at Off the Hook is 'Breakcam', a camera possitioned directly above the breakdancers. To check out a sample of the action which is projected click below.
