Conductor - Simon
Lindley
Family roots in Yorkshire and Belgium continue to exercise
an uncanny influence on Simon Lindley's life and career. One of the leading
British exponents of the Belgian and Flemish organ repertoire , he is firmly
committed to many aspects of Yorkshire and English musical life.
An indefatigable campaigner for the twin causes of choral
and organ music, Simon is closely associated with all the leading national
musical institutions. A Vice-President of the Royal College of Organists (he
served as the College's President from 2000 to 2002), and a former President of
the Incorporated Association of Organists, Simon is one of Britain's most
popular organists. A notable Westminster Cathedral debut in the late 1960s and,
particularly, his performance of the Elgar Sonata at the 1975 Proms broadcast
live from the Royal Albert Hall, established his reputation as a player of
distinctive style.
As a conductor, he served long periods with Leeds
Philharmonic and Halifax Choral Societies and has worked with leading British
orchestras as well as more locally-based ensembles, professional and amateur.
Simon is Master of the Music at historic Leeds Parish Church, where he also
directs St Peter's Singers, a leading chamber choir. His first conducting
experience was in the City of London and at St Albans and he retains to this
day strong links with both. His work with community choruses and brass bands is
well-known and an extensive discography includes recordings with his Leeds
choirs and two best-selling Naxos CDs - Handel Concertos with Northern Sinfonia
and French Organ Music from Leeds Parish Church.
He is delighted to have been chosen as the Conductor of
Sheffield Bach Society and looks forward to the rewewal of associations with
the city where his grandmother was born and lived until her marriage. Simon
comes from a musical family. His sister, Ruth, has just retired after many
years service in the professional choir at Brompton Oratory and their
great-grandmother, mezzo Marie Brema, sang the part of the Angel at the first
performance of The Dream of Gerontius in 1900. Simon's own family comprises
three sons, a daughter and two granddaughters. He lives at the confluence of
the West Riding industrial and rural heartlands in Fulneck Moravian Settlement
just South of Pudsey and handily close to the M62.
