Jenny Leadbeater, a native of Sheffield, has established a reputation, particularly in the North of England, as a singer of considerable versatility, with a wide repertoire of music spanning the 15th century to the present day. Jenny has performed most of the major classical works, as well as music by composers as diverse as Schütz, Fauré and Malcolm Williamson. Having also sung operas by Purcell, Mozart and Gilbert & Sullivan, she has a good appreciation of the different styles in music, and of how to interpret these in performance. Her early dramatic training is very useful too.
Having begun her career with a small group of 5 voices (The Tudor Consort), she is no stranger to motets, madrigals, and early songs. This experience has enabled her to build up an extensive and varied recital repertoire, including works by a number of modern composers, such as Gerald Finzi, whose settings she particularly likes.
She has toured Germany with Sheffield Bach Choir, singing Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Solemn Vespers; during 1991, amongst many other concerts, and has sung works by Malcolm Williamson (Master of the Queen's Music), and James Walker in their presence . She has fond memories of many concerts, one of the most notable being Mendelssohn's "Elijah" in June 2000, which was Dr. Roger Bullivant's last concert as Conductor of Sheffield Bach Society. Since then she has enjoyed a further performance of Wagner's Wesendonk Lieder, a Brahms Requiem, a performance of Bach's Solo Cantata 51 for Soprano and Trumpet, and Poulenc's wonderful Gloria. She particularly enjoyed performing Strauss' Four Last Songs and Fanshawe's African Sanctus - an especially exciting performance with the Sunduza Dance Theatre. Sadly, in November 2004, Roger Bullivant died. Jenny was very pleased to have been invited to sing "Elijah" again, in Sheffield Bach Society's concert in memory of Roger; this took place in October 2005. It was an highly emotional evening, but all agreed that it had proved to be a fitting tribute to the Conductor who gave so much of himself to the Society over 38 years.
Recital work includes pieces by Bach, Handel, Purcell, Delius, Howells, Vaughan Williams, Faure, Haydn, Finzi, Mozart, Schubert, Quilter, Warlock, Britten, Linstead, and Vernon Hoyle, who has written some pieces especially for Jenny.
