Markham Family Genealogy
Based upon a Markham family tree document of some age.

My grandfather, William Ralph Markham, obtained this printed document many years ago, which was in poor condition then, but mostly complete. I remember, as a boy, that the head of the family was Lord of a Manor in the 1100 or 1200s. It has over the years been repaired with brown paper tape and (what is now) very ageing cellotape. The top part of the sheet went missing many years ago, probably during a house move. This part contained information of a general nature on the Markham family, the crest and arms, and the first few generations. Currently, there are seven family lines, their predecessors missing. These 'lines' date from the late 1400s and early 1500s. One line continues to the late 1800s. These later ones only contain birth dates, whilst most of their parents' entries contain considerable detail; This fact, combined with the condition of the paper, lead me to think that it was probably printed whilst most of these family members were still alive in the 19th century. There are 563 individuals in this document; containing references to the Royal family and others of note, such as Oliver Cromwell.

Notes - regarding the original document.
  • I have no way of verifying or tracing the origins of this document. I do not remember there being any details of who produced, published or printed it.
  • Generally, of family members from Northamptonshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Cotham, Becca, Sedgebrook, with some more dispersed such as Kilkenny, Wisconsin U.S. etc.
  • Although missing now, I (fortunately) painted a copy of the arms, when I was younger. Described (from memory) in the document as a Lion (type ?) with Halo and Paw on Hames Or. The quality of this 'copy' is not too brilliant, as it is only 35mm in width, but is still reasonably faithful in detail. The choice of colours being mine, knowing no different. Unfortunately, I coloured the hames brown, at that time, not realising that 'or' meant gold. Anyway, how would I know what a hame was? I thought it was a harp. We didn't have many horses pulling carts about when I was young, I'm not that old !   There is an image of it here. (18k)
Please remember that this document is not verified,
It may however, provide clues for further research, that can be substantiated.

ADDENDUM (December 2008)
PLEASE NOTE - THERE ARE ERRORS IN THIS DATABASE

I have transcribed a copy of this document, a later version.
It adds extra information and has recently shown up some errors due to the missing sections of my original.

I am currently updating the family file and will then update this site (hopefully) in a much more friendly format.

Note - This family is still very much continuing,
with decendents in both the USA and England.

A family member is participating (as am I) in the Marcum/Markham DNA Project

Before you browse the tree .....
In order to preserve the 'feel' of the original document, I have entered the information in a slightly different manner than normal.
  • The only fields (information) entered in the database were that of:
Name, Date of birth, Date of death, Date of marriage, Spouse, and Notes.
  • The 'Notes' against each individual are the exact text as printed in the document (complete with any spelling errors), and are inline with each person. Any comments by me are in italics. There is a separate notes document, should any one wish to view it. It is of no use for navigating, but does enable one to see the entire contents of the document in one place.
  • The 'Notes' are appended to every individual that they were applicable to. For example, in the case of a husband 'A', and his wife 'B', the daughter of 'C'; The same notes are included three times, once against each of them.
  • Wherever possible, every individual mentioned in the original document, has there own 'slot'; including unconnected ones, so that every person may be found in the indexes.
  • Where unconnected individuals were noted, I have included all the separate notes where this person is mentioned, eg Queen Elizabeth I, was mentioned in five places, so there are five 'notes' attached to her.
  • For the purposes of navigation and identifing individuals, unless expicitly indicated otherwise in the document, the maiden surname of wives and the surname of males and females, is assumed to be that of their father. The situation may be clarified by refering to the notes of an individual.
  • Because the top part of the original document is missing (which included the head of the family and first few generations), this tree comprises seven family lines; So I have named the head of each of these: Line-1 MARKHAM ... to ... Line-7 MARKHAM.
  • Lastly, apologies for any inconsistencies in the appending of titles to individuals. Lack of experience with the software to blame.
* There's download info. at the bottom of the page.

Have fun.......
