THE PURKIS WALK  - STAGE 1.

RUFUS STONE - WITTENSFORD   O.S. Outdoor Leisure Map 22
The forest here has no marked footpath. Firstly we walk eastwards along an ancient track past the site of an early hunting lodge and then northwards to Wittensford. If you are lost, stop and listen - keep the sound of the M27 to your right and you will reach the B3079 road between the M27 & Wittensford.

Distance from Rufus Stone. Rufus Stone 270125
The first 0. 75 mile is an ancient track with occasional square pipe-line inspection points. It is not as easy to follow as in olden times, but seldom veers away from the direction in which we start - ENE
0.0 miles In the car park, with the Rufus Stone behind you, walk ENE past the prominent holly tree ahead to reach a second holly bush. Here take the right-hand broad track with WALLACE carved on a tree on the left. ENE
Continue on the more open track to cross a concrete-bagged ford by a broken paling fence at the north corner of enfenced Malwood Farm. ENE
0.3 miles Go straight on, down the path strewn with large fallen trees, and into a clearing. Take the broad grassy pathway slightly to the left for 100 yds. ENE
Here on our left is a copse of holly bushes and a low earth ridge marking the site of an ancient hunting lodge.
0.55 miles Leave the site of the Hunting lodge on your left, and continue along the broad grassy pathway slightly right for about a further 350 yards. ENE
Our way ahead is NE - as we leave our ancient track & head for Wittensford, 0.45 miles away. But first we could go into the clearing on our right to see if deer are there.
0.75 miles Take the marked way slightly off to the left through the wood, keep on for some 350 yards, and stop at a small holly bush in the middle of the pathway. You will see a fallen tree about 40 yards further on. NE
Wittensford is now the other side of Little Eye Green to our left.
0.95 miles Turn half left - NNE - and take the indistinct track across Little Eye Green to the two conspicuous conifers and oak tree ahead. NNE
The B3079 road to Wittensford is about 80 yards ahead of us.
1.1 miles Go straight ahead and turn left on reaching the road. N
1.2 miles Turn left on to the Wittensford bridge. WNW
1.2 miles

B3079 at the MINSTEAD / BRAMSHAW boundary.
