THE PURKIS WALK - STAGE 4.                                                                               
HURSLEY - KINGSGATE Long distance footpath(s) on route: Clarendon Way ( CW)
Distance from Hursley ' Kings Head ' public house, Hursley. 428253
  We leave Hursley along Port lane, which starts behind the ' Kings head. '  
  Walk up Port Lane, watching out for occasional traffic.  Port Lane is gently uphill for a fair distance. NE
1.8 miles The Old Kennels to the south of Olivers Battery 452270
  Take the bridleway on your right for 100 yards to      ' Foxcroft. ' E
  Do not take footpath between houses but leave Foxcroft to your left SE
  Continue ahead, with a field on your left and hedgerow on your right, to reach BBCS gate into Yew Tree Reserve, ignoring the uphill footpath. SE
2.1 miles Yew Hill Butterfly Reserve   - worth a visit if time allows.  455266
  Leave the reserve through its lowest gate and take the downhill path sharply to the left. NE
  At the low point of the path fork right following the double line of pylons, and at the next high point, where tracks meet, keep the pylons on your right. NE
  Approaching busy A3090, turn left to cross the road by the footbridge. NW
2.8 miles Whiteshute Lane footbridge over A3090 464274
  The route now follows the Clarendon Way ( CW ) and ancient Whiteshute Lane ( a sunken tree-lined track ) towards St. Cross. Local legend supports this as the route of Purkis' cart carrying Rufus' body to Winchester  
  From footbridge turn right, then fork right.  Whiteshute Lane is ahead. NE (CW)
  Follow Whiteshute Lane, or walk close to either side of it for better views. NE (CW)
  Walking the path to the left of Whiteshute Lane, with views towards Winchester Cathedral, do not pass the single seat but turn half right at it and cross over Whiteshute Lane for views to St.Cross and to St. Catherine's Hill.  From here drop downhill to the bottom metal gate.  
  At the bottom of Whiteshute Lane, near the metal gate, is a footbridge. NE (CW)
3.7 miles Footbridge over the London to Southampton railway. 473270
  Over the bridge, with Whiteshute lane signed left, go down Mead Road. E (CW)
  At St. Cross Road, the white gates ahead access St. Cross. N>S(CW)
4.0 miles Hundred Men's Hall, St Cross.      Tea and cakes available - take a break for 15 minutes.  11 hours and 10 minutes walking from the start. 474279

  Leave St. Cross by the north archway to go through the gate on the right following the ' Clarendon Way ' signs to the bridge over on the left E (CW)   N (CW)                 
  Take the gravel path through the water meadows. N (CW)
  Cross Garnier Road to regain  the gravel path through  water meadows. N (CW)
  To our left are the Winchester College playing fields.  
  At the end of the gravel path turn right, our last leg on the Clarendon Way. E (CW)
  Head towards the Cathedral by turning left into College Row. N
  At the Bishop's Palace ahead traverse the barrier left into College Street. W
  On our left is Winchester College, and later on is Jane Austen's house.  
  At the end of College Street turn right through Kingsgate. N
