REPORT BY COLIN WALLER, CHAIRMAN, AT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, WEDNESDAY, 22nd OCTOBER 2008

The 2007/08 season has been a notable one.

We had in my view four of the most rewarding and successful concerts:

    • Nov. 07: Vivaldi Gloria and Lauridsen Lux Aeterna
    • December 07: Handel Messiah
    • March 08: Mozart Credo Mass and Willcocks A Great and Glorious Victory.
    • June 08: Elgar The Dream of Gerontius

Ticket sales were high in every case, and the reviews and comments that we received for our performances were outstanding.

The soloists were amazingly good; young people in the main, starting off on careers that will enchant audiences for years to come.

The works generally called for large orchestras, and Southern Pro Musica contributed enormously to our concerts.

We were not invited to participate in the Chichester Festivities in 2008, but instead we performed ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ in June, two weeks before the Festivities.  The Cathedral was a virtual sell-out and the audience clearly enjoyed the work.

2009 will see our participation again in the Festivities, and although we cannot get the organisers of the Festivities to commit beyond one season at a time, your Committee will endeavour to retain that position.  Superb performances such as we had last year will make our task easier.

Other activities during the year were equally successful.

The tour to Dubrovnik was a delight, enjoyed by many in the choir and their guests, and our thanks to Jill for organising this.  Because of other commitments the next tour will not be for a couple of years.

In February 2008 we held a Singing Day, to which we invited other choirs and singers, and this proved to be popular and very instructive, stretching our abilities into different kinds of music.

My grateful thanks go as usual to Jonathan Willcocks and Richard Barnes, our musical duo, for another superb year of singing, and to your Committee members, without whose great endeavour, none of this would be possible.
