THE CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE Colin Waller We are approaching the end of another choir year, which seems to me to have been very successful on the choral front so far. Our last concert of the season will be Elijah on 4th July and, with ticket sales seemingly at record levels, let us hope that it has the right effect on the powers that be in the Chichester Festivities to secure future participation in the event. When choosing future music programmes for the choir, many factors are taken into account, including: What will the choir enjoy singing? How big an orchestra is required? How many soloists? How do we balance new challenges/works against established composers? What will our audiences enjoy? In what venue will we be singing? How much will it cost to give the performance? On this last point, your Committee endeavours to balance the books over a two- or three-year period, bearing in mind that some works are more expensive to perform than others, and that occasionally a year’s finances may fall into deficit. This year is probably one of those years. The Dream of Gerontius and Elijah are both rather expensive concerts to perform, although offset by the relatively modest cost of staging Mass in Blue. We must await the outcome of Elijah before knowing the full facts, but we could have a deficit this year of up to £5,000. However, the net surplus of the previous three years combined is £515, including a loss in one of those years. We hope to balance the books over the next two or three years. As we approach the end of the season, it is timely for me to remind you that soon after we return from the summer recess we shall be holding the AGM of the Choir and, as always, we are looking for people to fill the vacancies on the Committee. In the three-year cycle of appointing the Officers of the Committee, it is my turn to stand down as Chairman. Please give some consideration to joining the Committee and, if you feel like taking on the duties of Chairman, please put your name forward. I hope that you all have an enjoyable and relaxing summer break. Colin Waller
