More about the Ludlow Civic Society

Ludlow demands careful stewardship and we believe that it is our duty to assist everyone, including the professional planners and and elected councillors to protect the quality and character of Ludlow by seeking to ensure that the highest standards of design are deployed in both conservation work and in new development. Our aim is not purely conservation; we believe that good contemporary design will provide tomorrow's historic gems.

The strength of the Society's influence depends not only on the quality of its representations to other bodies but also upon the size of its membership. If you wish to join the Society please go to the
Membership Secretary's Page

Committee Activities:

Berrington court and other recent renovations - Raven Lane and Bell Lane Ludlow deserves the best architecture, most sensitive townscape and attention to detail that can be provided; the best way to achieve these aims is through a vigilant, vigorous and independent Civic Society. The effectiveness of the Society can be judged on its record, see what has been done on the Achievements page

Issues regularly discussed and acted upon by the Society's committee include:
- The current version of the local plan.
- Planning applications in the Ludlow area.
- Major local and County initiatives.
- Buildings at risk in the Ludlow area.
- Wider environmental issues (eg: see the
traffic in Ludlow page).

The Society nominates a representative to the Ludlow Conservation Area Advisory Committee which advises the District Council Planning Committee on all planning applications in the Conservation Area. Planning applications can be viewed on the
South Shropshire District Council's planning web site

Social and Educational Activities:

The Society provides members with an interesting and varied programme of outings and lectures with invited speakers. Although these lectures are open to anyone, a small entry charge is made with a concession rate for members. The Society occasionally organises other social events (such as the garden party shown here). Information about all the events is available on the Calendar of Events page.

The Society produces a quarterly publication called "Heritage News". Back copies of this and other documents can be found on the
Publications page

The Society has a close and harmonious relationship with the Ludlow Historical Research Group and other local societies.

Please note that both the Heritage News and the annual programme are produced on a voluntary basis. The Society is a charity with no regular income other than membership subscriptions and some limited sponsorship.
