Film Synopsis :

Telegu director Adurthi Subha Rao remade his Moogamanushulu into Milan, an intense love story where, unlike Heer Ranjha, the protagonists didn't touch each other even once.

Once again, as is the wont in passionate love stories, the feminine object of love was imagined as an idealised, unattainable demi-goddess. Nutan's classic posture lent a compelling credence to her character of the upperclass feudal heiress, Radha, who's taken across the river each day by a naive and excitable boatman Gopi (Sunil Dutt). All exchange of love and affection between the two protagonists is founded on notions of inequality. He, the worshipful commoner. She, the deified earthly goddess. Their 'love' crosses over into several afterlives as Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh sing 'Hum Tum Yug Yug Se Yeh Geet Milan Ke Gaate Rahen Hai Gaate Rahenge'.

There's a striking poignancy to the artless romance between the devi and her devotee. He teaches her a folk song for an inter-college competition, sings her to sleep with a silken lullaby when she's troubled and unhappy, and brings her a rose every day. She rewards him every day with a dazzling smile that lights up his life.

Interestingly, the age-old opposition between spiritual and corporeal love is epitomised by the contrasting characters played by Nutan and Jamuna. The latter plays the archetypal dhoti-chaser determined to seduce the besotted boatman away from his object of eternal adoration.
