History
The Brothers came to Tses in August 1997. It was rumoured in Tses that the Brothers would teach computers. We arrived with one computer.
Today, we have sixteen. A project was sent to the Combined Services Third World Fund in Dublin. They gave a generous grant and two years later a further grant. A room was set up with power points, bench and chairs to accommodate twelve computers. A smaller room was similarly set up with 4 computers, storage space and a work bench for repairs.
Courses
Beginner's Course: Fifty tasks adapted by Br Paul Tobin (ex James' St CBS), are used to teach the use of a word processor and a spreadsheet.
Refresher Course: Thirty more difficult tasks in the use of a word processor and a spreadsheet are used in this course. These were produced by Br Jim Quinn. Only those who have done the beginners' course can take this course.
Students
The courses are open and free of charge to two classes of students:
unemployed young people and school leavers from Grade 10 in the local secondary school.
A Certificate of Achievement is given on completion. To date, 234 have done the courses.
Staff
The Centre is run with a staff of four:
- Br W G Ryan - General Manager
- Fransiskus Cloete - Maintenance: Fransiskus has been trained at the centre to keep the computers in running order. He has become very good at this job. He is studying for the A+ examination, which will qualify him as a computer technician. The Christian Brothers donated a sum of money for the training of young people. Fransiskus Cloete and Michael Suwute did a three month course for technicians in Windhoek.
- Frank Rietz and Jonathan Isaaks do the actual teaching. They know word processors and spreadsheets inside out! Frank is studying the technician's course and Jonathan has done an accountancy course in Windhoek.
