Over the last three to four years, our literacy class has served a large number of senior citizens of our Tses community.
Class in progress To make the classes not only interesting but also to meet the needs of our people, we have tried to make variety the hallmark of our lessons. Each period is made up of three or four of the possible components: reading, writing, letter composition, music, fabric painting and even traditional dancing. When the need arises, informal chats about Aids, how and when to buy a coffin, pensions, family discipline, etc. are introduced.
Taking a break in class Officially the lessons are from four to five each afternoon but for many the corporal works of mercy occupy much of their time. To go to two or three funerals a month is normal! But the show must go on, with the numbers varying from eight to about sixteen keen students. On a good day we can start as early as three o'clock no matter the weather or the distance to be travelled on foot.
Bernie Cheesman Perhaps one of the most important features of our classes has been the opportunity given us to dispel misinformation regarding the social services and misinformation in general.
Each lesson is closed with a prayer. A prayer of gratitude for what is being done for the people of Tses by the Brothers is by far the most popular. Thank the Lord.
