...reading, listening, watching...

Sorry, but you're getting a pared-down version of "This Month..." because I basically just can't be arsed with it anymore. It seemed like a cool idea at the time, but it's way too much effort to critique everything I watch, read and listen to. I'll still tell you and maybe give you a brief opinion, but hell, I'm too lazy for anything else.

 Reading
Smalltown Antichrist by Iain Grant - do not read this book. We picked it up in Borders, and on first flick it sounded entertaining. But it's not. It's dull. So very dull. I felt nothing for any of the characters, and it was basically just a long, drawn out diatribe on politics and bureacracy. I really wish I hadn't bothered (and you don't hear me say that kind of thing often, believe me).
Drawing Blood by Poppy Z Brite - I really wanted to really like this book. And to be fair, I didn't actually dislike it. I just didn't love it, or its author, as much as I wanted to. It's a kind of ghost-story-cum-love-story with little bits of cyberpunk and other things thrown in for good measure. What it did do for me was make me really, really want to go to New Orleans. But if you're the slightest bit homophobic, this is not the book for you.
Everything You Need by A L Kennedy - at last, a book that I actually enjoyed this month! I read So I am Glad a few years back, and since this was on special offer in Waterstones, I thought I'd pick it up. It's a book about relationships, and you really get attached to the characters. I thought the ending was a bit weak, but that might just be me.

 Watching
Final Destination - didn't really know what I was expecting from this film; whether it was going to be an eerie creepy film or a jumpy creepy film. But it was jumpy. Very, very jumpy. And very, very good! It was much better than some of the more recent slasher movies, possibly because it was a new take on the whole thing - there was no 'and I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you darn kids' at the end, because there was no material killer to unmask. Go see, if you haven't already.

 Listening
Enema of the State by Blink 182 - I bought this ages ago, and I have to admit that apart from the singles, I've barely listened to it. Not that I don't like it, I've just not really been in the mood for it since then.
Scallywag Jaz and More - the best of Thomas Lang - this was a freak discovery on the shelves of Tower Records, seemingly a last stab by Sony to wring some money out of a band that are no longer on their label. I got into Thomas Lang many, many years ago and still have quite a soft spot even though they've pretty much disappeared into obscurity. If you're into mellow, slightly jazzy, easy-listening mood music, I highly recommend you seek them out.
