Before joining the blues band
JJ's style had developed through playing in a wide variety of
styles, going back to the mid-70s folk scene in Brighton, and
also including time with new wave, rock and country & western
bands (who can forget The Fabulous Dirty
Peckers?). In the early 90s he was also involved in the country-rock
band Grievous Angel and
all these influences were brought to bear on his interpretation
of the blues. From the first time he heard Little Richard scream,
and Chuck Berry play the guitar, he had a passion for the excitement
of raw, basic rhythm and blues, and tried to inject some of that
gut feeling into his playing. He originally learned to play on
acoustic guitar, and more recently returned to that style, performing
with bbk, an acoustic trio.
He joined forces with Arthur
in 1987 to form what eventually became ZZ Birmingham's Blues
Band, and remained a constant presence through many changes of
line-up until January 2001, when he decided to leave the band
to devote more time to his dog.
He formed a new band (Pontiac),
playing Americana, which met with some success but ultimately
folded due to a lack of gigs. Currently (October 2005) he is
"resting" and awaiting interesting offers.
He uses Fender Telecaster, Tokai
Strat, Jedson Les Paul, and Hofner Congress guitars, with a Fender
Twin Reverb amp.
