We've done this one before, the only way to do it, is find all the parts from a scrap car. I'd guess around £600 to do it that way.

One last thing, do you still stock the various intercooler pipes ( flexible one's) as some have seen better days !
Senders Name:

A standard exhaust will fit, although a sports version may be better. The air filter is ok. The pipes are no longer made sadly, but we usually manage by making them up as required from silicon hose and joiners.

Two possibilities if it isn't misfiring, blocked cat or mass air meter fault. A rolling road session should sort that out.

Problem:
I've just brought a in car adjustable bleed valve for my renault 5 gt turbo but it came with no fitting instructions. Do you know how to fit one or could you suggest a website that does. Please help as I am in need of serious boost!
Senders Name:
Adam Wiggett
Alans Answer:
The object is to bleed off air passing along the pipe between the inlet plenum and the wastegate actuator. The valve should leak air to atmosphere when you turn the tap. Don't run more than 12 psi of boost without changing the intercooler !

I,ve just brought this megane and I've noticed that the temp gauge is up and down like a yo yo I've had it about a week from a garage in halstead, is this normal and where should it normaly sit as ive been too busy looking at the elecs, as ive come from an 87 escort to an 96 megane any advice would be a great help oh yes it's only done 37000 miles.
Senders Name:
Carl
Alans Answer:
I would expect it to rise, and then fall as the temp goes up from cold and the 'stat opens. It will rise again if in traffic before the fan cools it again. If it doesn't go too high, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Could you let me know will a 1985 1600 ford orion ghia not injection run on unleaded petrol without putting in additives or will the car need tuning to run on unleaded. we have been told she will run without anything being done but i would like you opinion.
Senders Name:
C Porter
Alans Answer:
There is an element of doubt about these, as Ford made a pig's ear of the whole thing. Having said that, I wouldn't make too much of it. As long as it's running ok, and not pinking under light load, I would just put the stuff in and go for it....The worst thing that might happen is burning out a valve eventually, but as these do that anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.

hi ,im building a cortina mk1 with a sierra 2000 sohc injection engine and box. I have been offered a TT 2000 injection sierra GLS.I am toying with buying the turbo kit. I was wondering how much power a turboed 2000i engine puts out. Do you think it would be possible to drop the compression ratio useing cossie pistons and rods and then run more boost to produce more power.Would the std injection system be up to producing much more power?
Senders Name:
Natalie Hance
Alans Answer:
The idea is a sound one....you could run with low boost as it is, or go for it if you have the budget...Power output from 130 bhp up to 250 plus if you have the cash ! If you want to call me at the office, the number is 01752 345880...

Senders Name:
Liam Stewart
Alans Answer:
It's not really a proposition for tuning ! too small an engine to really get anywhere. It costs as much to tune a little one as a big one, and you get less for the money ! An engine swap is possible, but you'd need everything from the donor car...

Ok then... Start the car fine from cold everytime no problem... Then runs fine for hours, until, i switch off the engine to do what i have to do then try to restart the git...... Turns over fine but wont start. I think it may be tempreture related as it only ever does this when the car is warm/hot... After 15 / 20 mins when the engine has cooled down it then starts fine.. PLEASE HELP..... !!!!!!!!!!!
Senders Name:
Gordon Hillier
Alans Answer:
Have you checked the spark? just pull off the coil lead, hold it near earth, and get someone to crank it over....do it before you attempt to start when it's hot. There is a possibility that the hall sensor in the distributor is duff, I've seen it happen before that they just won't start from hot. Failing that, it may be running rich..

When im maintaining a speed at around 70 - 110 the car runs fine. But as soon as i depress the gas pedal to get a bit more speed, or if i go up a hill, the car struggles and lurches. What could cause the car to shudder/shake like this when it is under load? Ive checked the carburettor and had that tuned, but it still did not fix the problem.
Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
It sounds like fuel starvation - ok under anything but full load - it's when there is greatest demand on fuel supply - These have a little swirl pot ( I think ) - try by-passing it.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto (L reg)
Problem:
On short journeys the coolant seems to just dissappear. I have to top it up every 4-5 days to prevent overheating. I've checked for leaks in the system and can't find any. Not knowing much about cars, wondered if this might be a known problem with the Corsa. I'm worried about it being the head gasket, but there are no other symptoms to confirm it.

If the coolant is being lost, and there are no leaks you'll have to pull the head. Check it for cracks before you put it back.

His best bet is to buy a Haynes manual, it's more than likely that the bolts are stretch bolts, and are not torqued down...he must follow the instructions carefully... If he removes the head bolts evenly, starting from the middle, he should be ok.... I'm sorry to hear of your frustration.....!

I have a 1999 T Reg Mondeo V6 ST24, and I want it to go faster. My main gripe is that until it reaches 4000 rpm, the car feels sluggish and unresponsive. What would you recommend as the course of action for tuning this type of car, I have considered getting the ECU re-programmed by SuperChips, fitting a nitrous injection system even seeing if there is a turbo kit available for the engine.
Senders Name:
Chris Shuttleworth
Alans Answer:
Nitrous is not really an option for a road car, in my opinion! I doubt that you could get a turbo under the bonnet, no room! We could supply you with a Superchip if required. We also do an air filter conversion, together they give about 10 bhp, and a better response in the midrange. Cost about £300 ....

Is there a superchip available for this car and would it be O.K. to chip this age car although its only done 86,000 genuine miles as I've heard it might damage the engine. My timing belt stretched damaging my valve guides and breaking two rockers (all of which have been replaced and the head rebuilt). If all this is possible what power gains should I see from all three mods and how much for the superchip + Rolling
Senders Name:
Mark Trebilcock
Alans Answer:
A Superchip costs £230 inc fitting and vat, and will not damage the engine...I would expect to see another 10 bhp from the mods you describe. I am guessing that you have the later EFI engine in that car. The only really good way to sort an injector out, is to remove it, and get it sorted at an LSUK centre, or we'll do it for you !

Assuming you replaced the crank sensor....you could try routing the fuel pipe direct from the pump to the carb, bypassing the swirl pot with the return feed. I have known this area to give trouble !

I have a Vauxhall Carlton (H Reg)! Problem at the moment is the 2.00GLi had a timing belt change - it has been a very smooth car to drive until then - now the car makes a rumbling ticking noise and seem to come from the timing belt area - is this common - the garage say the engine is old (116,000 miles)- but i say it was fine before the timing belt change. Could the timing be out ?
Senders Name:
T Singh
Alans Answer:
I think it's unlikely that the cam timing would cause a noise. If the timing was out, you would very likely notice a power loss. It may be a good idea to check the belt tensioners, also the front pulley tension, as they would need to slacken those to change the belt, and may have over tightened them afterward, causing a rumble from the alternator.

Senders Name:

Yes, it is possible. The Lambda is designed to control the mixture within fine limits, but can only exercise normal control. A fault with the temperature sensor, for example, can easily override the Lambda. I would suggest having a fault code read done. It should not cost more than £30 plus vat.

Not all ecotec engines respond very well to induction kits. The purpose of a rolling road session is to establish if you are getting what you should be getting, as well as check out air filters etc. A Superchip is £240 inc fitting and vat (with us) and we saw 6 bhp extra the last time we did this. It appears to be temperature related.
Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
If it is temperature related, then it must be down to the temperature sensor. The ECU relies on the sensor to give information as to temperature, then corrects the mixture accordingly. If it is shorted, then the ECU will think it's hot all the time. Check the usual plugs and stuff, although the ignition system gives little trouble on these. Apart from that, you'll have to trot off to your local tuning expert...!

The only reasons for a bad idle are poor mixture control, or poor idle speed control. Have you checked for an air leak ?. You have a heater fan which should blow it about the place. I assume the fan isn't working ?..It may be siezed, you'll have to fish it out and see...

I wouldn't worry too much about a bit of creamy sludge, they tend to do that this time of year due to condensation. If you have no water loss or overheating, I would not worry until the oil was obviously contaminated . Don't forget the head gasket can blow in several ways. If at ain't broke, don't fix it ! And your best bet is to get a Haynes manual, and just do what the man says....

The compressions are ok, but he can run more boost than that. The engine should be safe to 14 psi if the fuelling and ignition are taken care of. It's hard to say why you may have a fault as there are too many possibilities to mention. There is no substitute for specialist knowledge at this point. The chances are they have just retarded the timing...that's all there is to the unleaded routine...just take it back, and ask them to set it up with 10 degrees of advance and try it..if it pinks, back off a bit at a time until it stops. This is not an exact science...!.. basically you want as much advance as possible without pinking...

Senders Name:
V Smith
Alans Answer:
It sounds like you have an air lock...you could try getting the car up to temperature... then check to see if you have heat in all the hoses.. they should be almost too hot to touch... if you have a cold one.. there you go.. The alternative is a blocked heater matrix..although you would likely get no heat from it at all..

Senders Name:

The Superchip is £165 plus vat, and works very well with these cars. It takes care of the flat spots and hesitations these suffer with. You can fit it yourself, very easy, or we can fit it and rolling road it for £32 plus vat. We take all the credit cards. ! and can post it to you. All we need is the code numbers off your ECU. By the way, we have used Jetex induction kits, (and similar), on these, and gained another 4 bhp.

It depends what sort of system you have. You probably have a carburetter and a wasted spark system. (no distributor) if that's the case, check that the choke is working, and that you have fuel from the pump jet. Failing that you may have to get someone to check the ignition system. If you have a distributor, then it'll be a black cap Lucas version, which are very prone to cap and rotor faults, so whip the cap off and see if it's in bad condition, they often are!

The only way of getting any more power from an air filter or exhaust system modification, is if there was some kind of restriction to gas flow there to begin with. As the car overheats even at idle, I would suggest that you must have a flow problem. It can be done...but it is quite expensive...at least £2500, if you want to get it anywhere near right. There is a special cast manifold required, plus new turbo, intercooler, engine management mods, and engine strip and build to new compression ratio. It's tempting to suggest the use of a Cosworth set-up, or better still, just buy a Cossie 4x4 !

I have a vauxhall Astra ' 95 With a Vauxhall 1.7 Diesel engine which is fitted with a 'Low Blow' turbo. The turbo is leaking oil and causing the engine to burn blue smoke. Do you think that this could be due to a blocked oil return pipe, or is the turbo knackered??
Senders Name:

A blocked return is a possibility, although I would guess unlikely, the return is fairly large compared to the inlet, and rarely blocks in service, unless the hose has collapsed. We could check the turbo out for you, and sort it out on a "cost of repair" basis, unless it is knackered as you suggest ! We can also supply an exchange unit of course. The only way of getting any more power from an air filter or exhaust system modification, is if there was some kind of restriction to gas flow there to begin with. For xample, if your exhaust strangles the exhaust gas output, and if the air filter is too poorly designed to allow maximum air flow, then removing or replacing them may well bring a performance benefit. You'll have to try it and see -with the aid of a rolling road. Dirt in the carb would not damage the engine, unless the subsequent lean mixture

My first choice of Turbo and maniforld would have been the escort Rs ne. The Fiesta Turbo is a bit iffy, being fragile, they crack more often and a lot more pricey to fix. However a good one will work. You could use the original injection system in the same way as Turbo Technics did with their XR3 conversion. You just connect the intake from the turbo to the air sensor and then blow into the throttle body. You can upgrade the injection system with a few little tweaks also the ignition system for boost c

I can supply a Hybrid turbo to your spec if required. Certianly a 360 degree thrust is a must, and I would suggest a cut back wheel in the turbine. I would be wary of over sizing the turbo to avoid lag. We can supply an actuator to suit your boost requirements, with some additional bleed off. The cost is around £490 plus carr. and VAT.

Have you cleaned out the breather inside the rocker box? These engines are subject to the "black death" - a build up of gunk inside the engine which blocks everything up - try poking around inside it. Also make sure you clean the breather on the other side, as well as the small bore pipe and fitting which fits in the inlet manifold.

It sounds very much like a duff Turbo, sucking up oil on the overrun. 27 psi is very high boost for a standard turbo. I can only recommend that you replace it with a hybrid. It is very hard to come up with a conversion for you. Most 16 valve engines are not strong on torque, and Renault bear this one out when you realise that their 1.8 8 valve engine produces more power at 3000rpm than their own 16 valve. I often get asked about this sort of conversion. The trouble is the cost of it all. You would need at least £2000 to get anywhere near it assuming you used second hand parts. As you mention turbo, I guess you have the turbo version. In that case a simple chip conversion would do the trick. It is in fact a board fitted in the ECU, which enables the use of extra boost, as you know, extra boost = extra power. Another 30 bhp makes a big difference especially at 3000 rpm.

I wqould check all the hoses...and I mean all of them, very carefully. It sounds like you may have a split in the air flow sensor hose. The water injection idea falls in a slightly different area to an intercooler. The object of the exercise is to provide a cooler charge temperature, which promotes a better fill rate, and less chance of detonation. An intercooler has the advantage of being there working all the time, and doesn't require any maintenance. I would have to see the layout of your blower installation to see which would be the best way around it. From our large stock of different intercooler types, I could come up with something.

You need to be running the correct mixture at all times. They protrude upwards, so the pipercross cannot go down onto the base plate. Do i need smaller bolts, or should i have had some other fixing device in with the base pl
Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
Yes, you need shorter bolts, they should have been in the kit......You should be able to pick them up in an oddpack from Halfords. Don't forget the lock washers, as you don't want the bolts in the engine. (nasty) You would be well advised to either have the car set up on a rolling road, or at least go up on the primary main jet one size (0.05mm )

To be honest, I would say you are about there ! There isn't much more you can do without pulling the engine to bits. A sensible boost pressure would be around 1 bar (14 psi). Have you had the car on a rolling road ?..a tweak on the mixture could be useful, and of course you could fit the group A carburetter ....GT Tuning do these. If you don't over do the boost, it's possible to get some reliability !

I was most distressed about your problem, and have spent a great deal of thought on this one. I have three solutions, (a) A brick under the throttle pedal. Alternatively give Schumacher his engine back at once....

There are no leaks in the exhaust system. Any ideas on this annoying problem?
Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
A throttle switch fault could cause that problem, by cutting fuel when it shouldn't on the overrun. They do play up on these cars, but often cause a bad misfire as well. It could just be a trait of the combination of parts you have fitted. Bear in mind that the original design will have faults like that ironed out by Ford ! If a tune doesn't help, you'll just have to learn to live with it I guess....

Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
This is not a very tuneable engine, but it will certainly run better with a Superchip. They tend to run lean on a part load, and hesitate when you push the pedal down. The chip will smooth out the midrange, and give better response. There is a small gain from an induction kit, although they can be noisy !. There is no need for a Power Boost valve on these cars, as the fuel pressure can be adjusted from standard.

I am not up to speed with the Chev S, however, I would suggest that you check the fuel supply first, maybe it could be a swirl pot fault (in the fuel tank )..I would expect this fault to get worse if you try to speed up. A supply fault will always get worse if you ask for more fuel.

The head was also gasflowed at the same time. Also, the car has a custom exhaust, induction kit and hybrid turbo. Should I chip it and what other mods should I consider?
Senders Name:
Russell Kavanagh
Alans Answer:
I would need to know what the number is from your ECU to know if a chip is applicable. The misfire,if intermittent, could be due to poor load sensing, causing a weak mixture. A rolling road session would show that one up. It could be that you have an air leak, this could create the lean mixture, and it may be that it only appears worse as the engine leans off with temperature.

Also it sometimes smokes on hard acceleration and when I come to a stand still there is sometimes some smoke,I was told that it could be a gate on the turbo ? and that it would need a new turbo. What would the benefits of a hybrid turbo be and what power increase would i get?
Senders Name:
Jason Lowe
Alans Answer:
The wastegate arm may be sticking, unless the car is chipped, in which case it might be the amal valve keeping the boost low for a while. The smoke on hard acceleration may well be due to a worn turbo, especially as it also smokes at idle. Worn valve guides can also cause smoke on start up and overrun. Of course a worn bore will also cause the engine to smoke ! A hybrid turbo is only a good idea if you wish for high boost and big power figures.

The only way forward would be through head and cam profile swaps, to radically alter the power levels. You would however, have difficulty getting it through an MOT, or passing a roadside emission check. The economy and low speed running would suffer. Better to wait until you have the 1.8 version, or go for a Superchip, and induction kit, which could well improve what you have, without overdoing it.

Typical 205! They all tend to be hesitant at low speeds, a combination of poor throttle control and a tendency to weak mixture on part load-- nothing to do with the idle setting. A faulty throttle switch could also be involved. Usually it takes a rolling road session to fix things. A power boost valve can be useful with these, as it gives a means of controlling part load mixture. Induction kits tend to make the fault worse!

I would suggest that your idle speed control valve is inop. If the car starts and runs well, but won't idle from cold, then the idle speed control must be poor. A tune on a rolling road should throw up any faults like this, as the car can be tested under load. Bear in mind that the idle mixture may be OK, but not the running mixture. Check the choke operation, to make sure it is going off all the way, also that it is not on for too long, as you could be using a lot of fuel during the warm-up period.

This sounds like detonation, and must be taken seriously before you blow the engine ! Our experience is of very useful gains from filter swaps on VTR's. I can't explain offhand why yours doesn't seem so good. It may be that you have the wrong filter, or perhaps it's over-oiled?. If your Saxo has more than one box after the cat changing the complete exhaust (cat back) might be better. It sounds like a typical Peugeot 205 to be honest. Poor throttle response, bad idle and they usually pink! They tend to run lean on a part throttle and it depends on the boost valve being set correctly for pressure. Cold running fast idle is controlled by the valve which hides under the distributor - check the feed to this as a poor contact will cause it to stay open too long. A rolling road engine tune would definitely be a good thing, but I am not sure that a chip will help.

Are you sure it's white, and not pale blue ? most Cosworths will give a puff on hard acceleration, mine does ! and they tend to suffer from poor valve stem sealing. Most cars will white smoke from cold - are you losing water ? if not, don't worry too much, unless your oil consumption is excessive. Any more than 10 psi boost, and you could do with an uprated breather kit. Your car just sounds out of tune, we charge £30 plus vat for a rolling road session and tune.

Peugeot 306 XSi
Problem:
The engine suffers from hesitation and rough running when travelling at either slow speeds 30-40mph or when crusing at a constant speed with very little throttle actuation. At low speeds 20-30mph a definate step can be felt in the engine power even without altering the position of the throttle. Travelling at less than 30mph a severe drop in revs is felt through the transmission when releasing the throttle. If I let the car free wheel the revs stay at around 1400rpm when travelling at speeds above 20mph.
Senders Name:
Ray Delaforce
Alans Answer:
It sounds like a management fault, at least in part. A rolling road session and a code read may well throw it up. Possibilities are poor mixture control or a throttle potentiometer fault. The system is designed to shut off fuel when on a trailing throttle over a certain rpm. I can only suggest we take a look at it! Incidentally, if you fancy giving it a performance tweak, we have found the air filter and chip conversion very effective on these cars !

I doubt that you have lost power due to the head skim, unless someone has gone mad with the grinder ! It's far more likely that the cam timing or ignition timing is out. Another possibility is a sensor failure of some kind. Sounds like a rolling road session is called for ! (£30 plus vat )

Senders Name:

Alans Answer:
Always a tough question to answer ! It all depends on your budget. Usually you can make some small gains, by fitting alternative air filters or carburettors. I would guess yours has a Pierburg, and would definitely go better with a Weber conversion . After that you are into engine re-design, and you have to make the big leap. If you have no constraints, there is nothing better than putting a bigger engine in it ! Let know how much you would like to spend on it, and I'll see what we can come up with.

We can provide a very effective superchip modification for the 24v engine. It comes in the form of a flash chip re-programme, which will liberate about 10 bhp, right in the middle of the rev range, where you need it! There is a possibility that we can also supply polyflex suspension bushes, which will improve the steering response. In any event, with a high mileage, a new set of shocks would be a good idea.

If you leave a car standing for too long with fuel in the float bowls, a chemical reaction sets up which can cause corrosion in the carburettors, blocking the galleries. The idle jets could be blocked - clean the carb internals and get it tuned!

I have a Cobra kit fitted with a 76 302 Ford originally sourced from a 76 Mustang. It appears to breath rather heavily from the Rocker box covers when fully warmed, although there are no strange noises or reduction in performance. Firstly would you expect all engines of this type to breath in the way described, and secondly if the problem is serious what would a rebuild or a fresh transplant roughly cost ??
Senders Name:
Tony Jamieson
Alans Answer:
My experience of this sort of engine is that most of the original breather systems are defective or missing which does not help! An engine in top condition should not breathe very much. It is only serious if it makes a big mess. It is due to combustion gasses passing the compression rings and building up in the crank case. A set of rings may be the cure. These engines are easy to rebuild and not expensive, around £1000 - £1,500 all in.

I took the car to one shop, they said that they did a pressure test, but no leak. There are still puddles of coolant on the ground. What could be the problem?
Senders Name:

Head gasket fault could cause water loss due to pressurisation of the cooling system, but not cause oil burning. It is likely that the shop you went to are correct about the engine rebuild. It all depends on your oil consumption - is it excessive? ALAN JEFFERY

As you know you should top up the engine from the heater outlet first!!! Difficult to do very much with these as the engine is basically very weak, particularly in the bottom end. I would not recommend a cam swap for this reason. Bad idle is caused by poor idle speed control or poor mixture control..assuming no engine faults, like bad valve seating. Hi Helen, It sounds like you have a classic Sierra problem, namely disc runout. The discs have a tendency to warp as do the hubs I can only recommend getting this checked out. You may need to replace the discs and the pads, but get the hubs checked as well. ALAN JEFFERY
