C

* = a first name, or a surname used as a first name.
The names of public houses/taverns are printed in bold.
Take note of the number(s) with the name in which you are interested and then refer to the 'KEY' page (link above) to identify the register(s).  Print off the two key pages for ease of reference.
Sometimes it can be useful to list the parishes where a surname occurs to see if it clusters in a particular area, or areas.
Alternatively, by using the 'key by parishes' page, you can find the reference number for the register in which you are interested before going to any particular surname.   If the number is not with the surname then the surname does not occur in that register;
if it is but there are no forenames with it let me know and I will put them in.
+++  means the surname occurs in almost
every register but forenames can still be added to any confirmed reference number.

was tailor by trade.  This Abraham was tenant of this tenement after his father, and
had by his first wife, Thomas, who married the daughter of James Chidley, and lives
now in Chidley's tenement (of which hereafter) ....... Mr. Gittins's tenement in Newton
was formerly the land of that ancient worthy family of the Banasters, of Hadnall.......
the first tenant that Mr. Gittins had here was one Chidley, a weaver, who was married,
but had no child.    This Chidley, in his  later days, was distracted, and would walk abroad
all night, making a noise and complaining of taxes and tallages..... I can remember his
widow living in a little house in Newton that had no chimney ....Anne Chidley ... after
her decease Richard Clarke ....built a chimney in this house, and held only the house
and garden:  while he was a quaker he buried several of his children, and I think one
of his wives in this garden. ....

  CHIDLOW contd
The History of Myddle (1710) by Richard Gough
.... Chidlow's tenement is in the Earl of Bridgewater's land;  it is now in lease to
Mr. Lloyd of Myddle.   One Thomas Chidlow did live in the house, which was then a
poor pitiful hut, built up to an old oak, but now it is a better house;  it stands near the
side of the lane called Divlin Lane formerly, and now Taylor's Lane.   This Chidlow
had four sons Roger, Thomas, Samuel, and James.   Roger lived many years a
servant to old Roger Sandford, of Newton, and had laid by some money and married
Alice, the daughter of Richard Wolfe, of Acton Reynold, and soon after died.  I think
he had no child.   Thomas was servant to Rose Hancox, of Broughton, a widow and
afterwards married her .......Samuel married Elizabeth Beech of Acton Reynold....
Samuel Chidlow and his wife were both provident and laborious persons, and got an
estate in money, and having only one son and one daughter.   This Samuel by his
last will left £100 to his wife, £100 to his son, and £200 to his daughter.  James
Chidlow continued tenant of this place after his father. He had only one daughter who
was married to Thomas, the eldest son of Abraham Taylor, who is now sub-tenant of
                               this place.
