HOME
KEY (with link to Key by Parishes page)
M
* = a first name, or a surname used as a
first
name.
The names of public houses/taverns are printed in bold.
Take note of the number(s) with the name in which you
are interested
and then refer to the 'key' page (link above) to identify the
register(s). For ease of reference print off the two 'key' pages.
Sometimes it can be useful to list the parishes
where a
surname occurs to see if it clusters in a particular area, or areas.
Alternatively, by using the 'key by
parishes'
page, you can find the reference number for the register in which you
are interested before going to any particular surname. If the
number is not with the surname then the surname does not occur in that
register;
if it is but there are no
forenames with it let me know and I will put them in. +++ means the surname occurs in
almost
every register but forenames can still be added to any confirmed
reference number.
Wills listed below - see notes on Home page.

MacCALLUM Calum was and is a popular Christian name in Gaelic-speaking
circles; its earlier form was Colm,
and is the same as that of St. Columba; it appears in a different
form in Malcolm. Although
overtaken in the power struggle by the clan Campbell, the MacCallums
were made hereditary
constables of Craignish castle in the 15th century. Another
branch received a charter to the lands
of Poltalloch, still held by MacCallums, although at one point
the name was assimilated to Malcolm
for reasons which are by no means clear. Gilbert MacCalme
was a merchant in Ayr in 1632, and
Iain M'Callum was murdered at Dunaverty in 1647. Although
still common in Argyllshire, MacCallum
has recently lost its place in the top hundred Scottish surnames -
(Scottish Surnames - David Dorwood 2003 )

MacCANN From the Irish personal name Cana, meaning a wolf-cub;
alternative forms are MacCana and McGann.
The MacCanns were lords of Clanbrassil, a district of Co Armagh on the
southern shore of Lough
Neagh; the name is still common in the area, although the power
of the clan declined at the end of
the Middle Ages; it was no doubt brought to Scotland in the 19th
century -

MANISTY From Reaney & Wilson's
Dictionary of English Surnames: Manesty in Borrowdale,
Cumberland
is Manistie/Maynister in
1564. Whether the Yorkshire surnames derive thence is not certain but
Manesty is a normal
development of Mannolfstygh
(1315-1316 Wakefield, Yorkshire) and Cumberland
surnames are not uncommon in Yorkshire. (Also) from Manningtree, on the
Essex side of the Stour,
usually Manitre, it occurs as
Manystre 1291 and 1343 and
this appears to have been the local
pronunciation which became Manister/Manisty.
