I am a Courtney Walsh fan and I hope he takes at least six wickets during the SA tour to the West Indies beginning in march 2001. Maybe Citizens For A Better Trinidad and Tobago(CBTT) which is the first foreign organisation to honour Walsh with the Trinidad and Tobago Republic Day Award can organise a special Caribbean Day in tribute to this great fast bowler after he gets to the 500 mark.

Concerning membership - I have to agree about excellent value - £75 for me and Mrs Phil for all Championship, NCL and the 3 B & H zonal games plus preference for ODI and Nat West etc tickets is astonishingly good. I too recall an article about changing prices but, like Richard (whose excellent synopsis of one day games I recommend) did not pay it much heed.

Phil, I know the club announced several changes to membership rates & structure about a year ago. As none of them affected me I didn't take much notice, and so cannot be sure whether these covered buisiness memberships, but I rather think they did. Why not write to Colin S about it as it sounds as though you're not getting all the mailshots. Personally I find the membership excellent value.

Chris
Sorry, my original message got truncated. I was going to make two further points:
1. If you know his county of birth & that county is a first class county, then try contacting the club in question. It is highly probable that he played for that side if he played at first class level. Wisden no longer lists 19th century players who only appeared in a few games so the fact he's not listed doesn't prove too much. If you're sure that's Gloucs, then contact Nevil Road ask whether they still have records of non-1st class matches or players.
2. From personal experience, you should not place too much reliance on the fine detail of oral family histories. "Played with WG" could very easily mean played in a team against WG; it might even mean he played at about the same time. In other words, there will be a grain of truth, but the highlights tend to get exaggerated. If, for argument's sake, he played in a Country House fixture with or against WG, this may be almost impossible to trace unless you are very lucky.

Chris, I'm sorry to tell you there is no Atwell (or similar) in either David Green's history of Gloucestershire CCC or Keith Gerrish's book of Gloucs 1st Class Records 1870-1997. This means he did not play for the Gloucs Ist XI, However WG played for all manner of other teams. Are you sure your Grandfather was a Gloucestershire man? I ask because1962 Wisden lists two Attewells who played for Notts. They were born inthe 1860s and so could well have been playing circa 1890. Wisden doesn't necesarily

Why do people still not understand the Duckworth/Lewis method after all this time. The principle is simple and in matches which it is applied to the results are very close, which indicates that it is a fair system, or at least fairer than the previous system. With regard to why Gloucs had to score more runs than Sussex, this was because Sussex where compensated for the lost overs during their innings. SIMPLE!

Such are the ways of the D/L method that part of tyhe equation is to penalise the 2nd batting team ....look up the full rules on the internet for D/L its amazing....whatever, however, what a great result its almost unbelievable we now look like winning all 3 ....lets hope our neighbours lose tonight and a full house next week at Bristol with 3 cups on show will make it a night to remember .....superb show boys well done...kev.....

Not another Duckworth Lewis win for the Shire! What will CMJ say about our win at Sussex, especially as his son was playing! But why did we have to score 13 more runs than Sussex in the same number of overs? Are Shire playing handicap cricket because they are so much better than the rest?

A frequent cry these days is that there is too much cricket played with the implication that, somehow, this is a major contributor to the weakness of the England test side, the poor standard of the county Championship, etc., etc. The following statistic may therefore be of interest.

According to the 2000 Year Book, Gloucestershire bowlers sent down 3,868.4 overs in all 1999 GCCC first team games (45 matches, 96 playing days excluding reserve days). Three bowlers delivered more than 500 overs : Alleyne 551.4, Lewis 592.3, Smith 628.3

According to the 1954 Year Book, the equivalent numbers for 1953 were 4,130.0 overs (31 matches, 93 scheduled days). Again, three bowlers sent down more than 500 overs: Scott 713.2, Lambert 810.5, Cook 960.4.

1999 isn't quite typical because there was no KO section to the B&H in that year and we didn't play any first class games against tourists or the universities, so no doubt the totals for this year (2000) will be higher. However, it seems to me that the inescapable conclusion is that Counties do not play more cricket than they used to. They play about the same amount, but spread over more days by virtue of slower over rates and one day games with a less than full day's (in the 1950's sense) cricket.

this is a reply to the excellent posting from richard west, who seems genuinely astounded by the success of the gloucs team in one day cricket and its lack of success in the four day format. the first point is an obvious one. courtenay walsh was (and is) one of the greats and gloucs were able to hide behind the great man. the young, up and coming bowlers (and some of the batsmen) may be did not take on the responsibilty they needed to because at the end of the day the team could rely on courtenay to tak

Re Richard West's message, I knew Mike smith when he was nineteen, in his first year of university , and he had been rejected by Yorkshire then. I doubt that he had finished growing. He was already on Gloucestershire's books. Your dead right that he hardly ever bowls a bad spell, and that's is why he should have played far more often for England. Darren gough has some good spells, but often looks, as in this test match, bereft of ideas. I don't think the batting in one day games is down to journeyman stuf

Richard, to deal with the one-day issue, I beleive that the club have targetted one-day succes at the expense of the four-day game, and having found a winning formula, intend to stick with it. The one day side has a perfect blend for limited overs cricket, and the three main recruits from last summer, Harvey, Barnett and Snape have proved crucial signings. I think that the prestige and financial rewards for one-day success are now so important to the club that a poor showing in the Championship is a price

We currently have a side that is enjoying unprecedented success in the one day game, yet is consistently overlooked by the selectors in favour of more "talented" players when selecting one day squads. Were we as good at the championship but pathetic in the one day game, there can surely be little doubt that the England test side would regularly include several Gloucestershire names. To do otherwise would be like suggesting the 1950's England team be picked with no Surrey players.

Why is this? Does the establishment have a "down" on Gloucs? Are our players really less talented? If our players are not talented, how come they do so well at the one day game, but if they are talented then why are we bumping along the bottom of the championship? I really would appreciate serious opinions from other readers of this site.

For what it's worth, and with the exception of at least Jack (now retired from international cricket) I begin to suspect that part of the answer is that we have a number of journeymen who play the basics really well. At the one day level this is sufficient to defeat perhaps more talented players who rely on their skill to disguise a disregard of the basics, but without the addition of one or two consistently heavily scoring batsmen and at least one real quickie or wicket taking spinner we will always be found wanting at the first class level.

I began to wonder about this in the B&H game against Surrey last year. It seemed to me that several Surrey batsmen came to the crease convinced they could hit our bowlers out of the ground, and in the attempt to do this missed any number of opportunities for singles turning them into "dot" balls. I remember seeing Proctor do something similar against Underwood in the 1977 B&H final - his partner (?Foat) pushed a single whenever he had the strike and I think scored the faster against "Deadly" in terms of runs per 100 balls received.

Take Mike Smith. It is said that Yorkshire rejected him because he was too small to be a successful fast bowler, yet when did you last see him bowl a bad spell? In contrast, how often do you see an England fast bowler who is built for the job spray the ball all over the place or consistently bowl the wrong length? I don't say they all do it all the time, but it certainly isn't an unusual sight.

Having turned 50, am I developing a "things were better when I was young" syndrome or is there something in what I say. Do we just lack a Graveney (Tom!), a Milton, an Allen or Childs, or what?

Certainly the batting needs strengthening, but to succeed in the first class game I rather fancy we are a bowler or two light. I don't want to belittle our squad, but a fast (not f-m) and/or a top class spinner who can beat batsmen through the air on unresponsive wickets would help no end.

Probably just as well with what transpired. Surely this is part of the reason cricket is now a minority sport in this country, if even local radio doesnt carry coverage. I can add a little bit to Phil's reply. 4 Sussex batsmen (Wilson, Relf twice & Vine) made 100s, but only one othe player in either side got past 30. Jessop scored 0 & was absent ill the second time around. Glos made 66 & 80, while Sussex managed 309 & 307-5d. I believe the game was over in two days (21 & 22 August), but don't have a full scorecard. Sources: Gerrish & Britton's book on Jessop.
