Two Gloucestershire players have been snubbed again by the England selectors, whilst Mark Alleyne has been name England 'A' captain for the second winter running.
Alleyne will captain the 16-man squad to the West Indies where they will play in the domestic first-class competition, the Busta Cup. The 8-team tournament will be played in January and February 2001. The matches do not clash with Alleyne's games for the England One-Day International team in Pakistan before Christmas and in Sri Lanka after the Busta Cup is completed.
However, the leading English first-class wicket taker in 2000 with 72 wickets, Jon Lewis has been snubbed by the selectors. The 25 year-old bowler has performed consistantly over the past few seasons claimed his personal best this season against Zimbabwe. Lewis could get a chance to go on the tour as he has been put on standby after four injury prone bowlers were named (Tudor, Sidebottom, Harmison and Silverwood).
The selectors also opted for Matthew Hoggard to replace Mullally in the full One-Day Squad and not Mike Smith. Smith has been the most consistant bowler in the country in the past two season, playing the the dominant one-day side but again has been ignored. |
