Gloucestershire captain Mark Alleyne was the
hero for England as they comfortably beat Queensland in the final warm up game
for the one day series against Australia.
Alleyne boosted England's total to 324 for 6
before demolishing the Queensland tail to leave them all out for 232 and seal a
92 run victory in Brisbane. In the first day-night match of the tour and the
final warm up for the internationals, Alleyne staked a strong claim for a place.
Alleyne batted at number 7 and came in when
the score was 215. He then attacked the bowling viciously scoring a quickfire
60 off only 40 balls and sharing a 92 run partnership with Lancashire's Neil
Fairbrother.
Alleyne's bowling was also world class. He
was the seventh bowler used but still managed to finish the match with the best
bowling figures. Alleyne picked up a wicket with his first ball and then with
his second but failed to achieve a hat-trick. However, Alleyne continued to
demolish the Queensland tail and, having picked up the 9th and 10th wickets,
finished with remarkable figures of 4 for 6 off 2.2 overs.
This great performance cannot fail to go
unnoticed by the selectors as they prepare to pick the side for the first one
day international against Australia on Sunday 10th January.
Mark Alleyne, obviously delighted by his match
winning display, modestly played down his bowling performance. He said his
figures flattered him, before adding that he felt he had staked a strong claim
for a place on Sunday.
The Gloucestershire captain, heading towards his benefit year, now has a very good
chance of making the final eleven against Australia and must surely have his
name pencilled in for the squad for the world cup later this year. |
