ALLEYNE ENGLAND CHANCES PUT ON HOLD

The World Super 8's tournament, in which Mark Alleyne was selected to captain England, has been cancelled. The Western Australia Cricket Association who are organising the event in Perth, said that the decision was due to difficulties attracting the world's best players. The inaugural event will now be held in 1999.

The news is desperately disappointing for Alleyne. Rony Irani and Andrew Flintoff were also in the squad making the reason for the cancellation look ridiculous. The tournament would have been the perfect springboard for Alleyne to be selected for England in other competitions. Hopefully he will be compensated with a place in the squad for the Carlton & United series at the end of the Ashes tour or the Sharjah Tournament in April which will be named at a later date.
