Christianity in India spread from the south. Its history is a missionary one. There are many Christian religions in India today although Roman Catholicism dominates. It recognises obligations to the state and is largely independent of Rome. Christian influence today lies mostly in the social fields (welfare, schools, services etc.). Proselytation is not widely practised.
