About ME

ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), also know as CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) or PVFS (Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome), is a complex, physical condition which can have a wide range of symptoms. Among the most common are: extreme physical and mental fatigue, aching muscles, flu-like feelings and persistent headaches. Other symptoms include loss of concentration, digestive disorders and sleep disturbance. These symptoms tend to fluctuate from day to day and even from hour to hour, and are often made worse by physical and / or mental overactivity. ME can be extremely debilitating and disabling.

Research indicates that the illness frequently results from a viral infection. Other triggers include vaccinations, pesticides and traumatic events.

At present there is no diagnostic test for ME and there are no specific treatments. Many people find that their health improves if they can get adequate, quality rest and if they are able to make certain changes to their lifestyle. Some people find complementary therapies and treatments beneficial.

It is estimated that there are around 150,000 sufferers in the UK.
