| This is what the car looks like now. A good T-cut
has brought the paintwork up very nicely. In some ways it's a shame the bonnet
is black, but I think it looks rather good like that! The bonnet is from a
Renault 5 Alpine Turbo, hence the bonnet scoop. It's actually quite pointless
because it is over the heater vent - it isn't an air intake for the engine and
does nothing to cool the engine! |
I originally bought the car to use for spares for mine, but as the car drove fine round the block (save for a wheel scraping on the front under cornering) and the rest of the car was very sound and in reasonable condition, we decided to repair it.
The damaged wing was replaced with a new one, and all the other parts were sourced from the local scrap yards. Repairing the car was surprisingly easy. Once the wing, bonnet, bumper and headlights had been removed, the inner wing was straightened by gentle persuasion using a hammer and dolly. Other parts of the front of the car were slightly out of alignment and a couple of spot welds had come adrift, but these problems were solved very quickly and easily. Once the alignment of the front of the car was correct, the new wing was bolted on, followed by a bumper, headlamp, grille and bonnet. The wing was sprayed using aerosols and looks reasonable.
The interior of the car was in very poor condition, so was replaced by the interior from a scrapped car.
There are a few niggling problems with the car, but overall it has been a bargain - a very presentable car for a total cost of around 2-300 pounds!
