The last Will and Testament of Thomas Elkyn


1 In dei no[mi]ne Amen The thrydd daye of February Anno 1567 in
2 the tinthe yeare of the Raigne of owre Sov[er]aigne Ladye Elizabeth
3 I Thomas Elkyn of the Newsteadd w[it]hin the p[ar]ishe of Trentham
4 and in the countie of Stafford, and dioses of Lych & Coventry
5 sycke in bodye, but whole in mynd and of p[er]fect memorye
6 Lawde & prayse be to God Almightye make my laste wyll
7 and testament in maner and forme folowynge which Fyrst
8 I comytt and surrender my soule into the handes of God
9 my Maker and Redemer, And my bodye to be buryed in the
10 p[ar]ishe churche yearde of Trentham, Also After am brought
11 whome, my debtes legacyes sun[ ]allo.. & bequestes payd
12 I wyll that All the goodes at the howse to remayne as
13 they now doe untyll Sant Marye daye in lent next, And
14 then the same to be devyded betwyxt my two sonnes
15 Roger and John to either of them & theire owne goodes as well
16 moveable as  unmoveable, And Afore suche dyvysion
17 made my wyll is that Roger my sonne shall huse the
18 kyne that be my sonne John's, either to hyre, or elles
19 to bye them, Also my wyll is that the sayd Roger shall
20 huse the oxen which be my sonne Johnes for their meat
21 for one whole yere aft[er] my decease, Also my wyll is
22 that Roger my sonne shall kepe All the cattayle of my
23 sayd sonne Johns untyll mydsomer next even as they
24 have .....? kept heretofore, Also I wyll that Roger my
25 sonne shall kepe for hys brother John iij [three] calves
26 untyll the Inventyon of the Crosse come twelve monethe
27 Also I wyll that Roger my sonne shall gyve unto
28 my sayd sonne John hys table for the space of two
29 whole yeres after my decease w[ith]owt anny interruption
30 Faryinge at all tymes & seasons as the sayd Roger
31 hym selfe or Annye of hys And in consideratyon of 
32 Roger all the corne in the barne and All the corne
33 growynge uppon the grownd, Also I gyve & bequeathe
34 unto my sayd sonne Roger All waynes, plowes, harowes
35 chaines, yolkes, w[ith] all suche stuffe belongynge to
36 husbandrye (except one cheane and one payre of plowe
37 Ironns w[hich] I wyll that my sayd sonne John shall have
38 at suche tymes as the sayd John kepeth? howse of hys
39 owne, Also I gyve to my sayd sonne Roger iij [three] pannes
40 and also two pottes, Also I gyve & bequeyth to my sonne
41 John all suche H...men stuffe as are [torn word] coffer w[i]th
42 all that I have of that soort, Also I gyve & bequeathe unto
43 my sayd sonne Roger one lytell fether bedd, Also I gyve
44 unto my sayd sonne John All the Resydew of my beddyng
45 Also I gyve & bequeath to Roger my sonne iiij [four] coffers, And
46 I gyve unto my sonne John All the Rest, Also I gyve
47 unto Roger my sonne the best brooche w[i]th  the brandyron
48 and potthookes, the great whyche? and the cupbourd and
49 Also all freane? ware as loomes, futtes, turnelles w[i]th
50 suche lyke, Also I gyve & bequeyth to John my sonne
51 all the pewter vessell that I now have, Also I gyve
52 & bequeth unto the sayd John my sonne All greyote cattell  as
53 oxen, kyne, heufes [heiffers] shepe, (my heryat excepted)
54 Also I gyve & bequeyth to Roger my sonne All the
55 Swyne at the howse that be myne And also I gyve
56 & bequeathe to my sayd sonne John All the resydew
57 of my goodes not bequeythed, Also I ordeyne
58 constytute and make John my sonne and John Hyll
59 my sonne inlawe my trew & lawfull executores
60 to execute thys my last wyll & testament churgynge
61 them as they wyll Ansoware at the dredfull daye
62 of doome to see thys my last wyll accomplisshed and
63 performed accordyngllye, Also I make Roger my
64 sonne, James Bowehurst? & John Amyson my
65 oversears, Wytnesse to thys my last wyll & testam[en]t
