"West Dell" is the oldest part of the building - 17th Century. The rest
of Dell of Abernethy dates from 1780 when it became the farm house for Lower Dell.
During renovations thatch was found in the eaves, blackened by the smoke from the fire that in those days was in
the centre of the house. Later stone fire places were built on the gable ends and a slate roof replaced the thatch.
Around 1820 Dell of Abernethy was the residence of William Forsyth, head forester for the area. He planted the
variety of trees that you can see in the grounds.
His son became minister of Abernethy church and wrote the story of the parish and early childhood memories at Dell
of Abernethy in his book "In the Shadow of Cairngorm", which can still be purchased locally.
For a time Dell of Abernethy became a shooting lodge for the Seafield estate and is still marked as "Dell
Lodge" on many maps.
We became the owners of Dell of Abernethy in 1977, and finally in 1982 finished renovation and construction of all six cottages.
"Grant" is a common name in this area with Castle Grant on the outskirts of Grantown-on-Spey only 6 miles from Nethy Bridge. Other names that have connections with the parish of Abernethy can be found if you
