ABOUT ME

Welcome to the studio were I'm showing a variety of subjects that I've been asked to paint since going professional in 1968. Like all things creative you can only show where you presently are, and even then your humbled by where you feel you still have to go.

Painting, drawing and creating generally is a continuous path with no end, and every time you make a step forward, the paintings made prior to this moment all seem to loose there significance because they do not contain your new found knowledge. Usually only you suffer this feeling as your past patrons are perfectly happy with these acquisitions, but resting on laurels is not recommended. This leads to inflated ego's, plateaus and indeed covetedness.

Watercolour painting, if done with freedom, is wonderful, oil painting is forever mysterious, both are magical and full of wonder and beckon you to learn more about the earth via paint. This is an artists life. Fascinating and fraught with highs and lows. Every time, when asked to paint a picture, you feel delighted, for it means you have worth in the eyes of other people. and this means you must be okay in the paint and create division.

In the lifetime of Joseph Mallord William Turner, (commonly just called Turner) he produced over 50,000 original paintings until his death in 1851 aged 76. Only recently, a further catch of his work has been found. In my opinion, this man was a real paint enthusiast, capturing the world about him with gusto and fire, and if I dare compare anyone to the way I feel about art, then it is Turner.

I've painted approximately 25,000 originals up to date, but never have time to hold exhibitions as the work has all been sold. If I have a painting longer than a week, I consider it a failure.

The way I see paintings is that they are done for the pleasure of others and for me to enjoy the journey of painting them. I welcome any opportunity to create a painting, for anyone on any subject, in any medium at any size. So to everyone who keys into this site, please don't feel that it costs the earth to commission a piece of work. I will happily paint your little pet, or fulfill your requirements for a major work of Venice's waterways, for example.

Please browse through my site and simply bear me in mind if there's anything that requires a brush and paint.

My best wishes,

John Hassall.

P.S. Start painting yourself, it's fun and rewarding!
