To restore the Stuart name to the British Throne, following his grandfather's deposal around sixty years previously. Embarking upon a bold campaign, the Prince's initial encounters encouraged a march southwards on the British throne. His place in Scottish folklore, and Drambuie's, are immortalised in the tale of his most galant escapade Progressing to within 127 miles of London, to the City of Derby, news of counter government forces amassing and outnumbering them six to one reached the Scottish encampment. Retreat was imperative. Only aspirations died in Derby that day. But soon the killing started, ending in slaughter of the Prince's remaining forces at Culloden, in the far North of of Scotland, months later. However, loyal troops and individuals shielded the Prince from his enemies, foiling all attempts at capture, before making good his eventual escape. Of the faithful, none was as steadfast as Captain John MacKinnon, to whom the Prince gave the recipie for his personal liqueur as a mark of deep respect and genuine affection. Legend has it that the MacKinnons kept the Prince's recipe in the family for over 150 years, keeping the liqueur solely for their own use. And not until 1906 was the widespread appreciation of Drambuie made possible, after Malcolm MacKinnon had moved from Skye to Edinburgh and forged a career in wines and spirits. He believed in Drambuie's finer qualities, and his quest to produce commercial volumes of the liqueur involved the judicious use of the age old, secret herbal essence, the recipe for which was always kept under lock and key by the family. To this day, the original recipe is known only to the MacKinnons, who remain personally involved in the making of Drambuie.
