Challenging New Labour's Tory policies at the General Election
AFTER four years in government, New Labour has dashed the hopes of millions who voted for it against the Tories in 1997.
It has given pensioners miserly increases, and has refused to restore the link between pensions and earnings.
It has continued with privatisation despite the disaster on the railways and the fact the vast majority of people want the rail renationalised.
It has stood by as mass job losses have been threatened at car plants in Luton, Longbridge and Dagenham, at steel works in north east England and South Wales, and in high-tech industries like Panasonic in Cardiff.
It has fanned the flames of race hatred through accommodating to the scapegoating of asylum seekers.
It has allowed the public transport system to continue to degenerate, and pollution and environmental destruction to grow.
It has abandoned any aim of securing social justice, and overseen a growing divide between rich and poor.
The only reason Labour can be sure of winning the next general election is that many millions of voters still see the Tories as even worse.
But there IS an alternative. It is the Socialist Alliance. Instead of being "business friendly", we will tax the rich to fund the NHS, education, and give pensioners a decent earnings-linked income.
We will nationalise corporations which try to sack their workers, renationalise the railways, and reverse all Labour privatisations, including air traffic control and the London Tube. Public services will stay public – but under the democratic control of those who work in and use them – and they will get the funding they need. We will end student tuition fees, and provide free, high quality education for all, funded through taxation.
We will wage war on poverty. We will combat racism, sexism and homophobia. The Socialist Alliance has brought together in united action a broad range of existing socialist organisations, trade unionists, community campaigners, anti-racists, and many people who have been driven away from the Labour Party by Blair's blatant disregard for social justice and fairness.
Join us in building a socialist alternative. To join costs £2: but why not also send a donation towards the campaign, which will cost at least £4,000. We have no wealthy millionaires to back us. And unlike Andrew Smith's campaign, which has set out to court big businesses in Oxfordshire (see Press Release Socialists step in to Oxford Labour funding row), our campaign is based among ordinary working people. So far we are in no danger of infringing the new laws on big donations. Every little helps!

- getting us invited to speak at a trade union or campaign meeting,

- canvassing right up to polling day.
