Press Release
Tuesday February 20: Immediate Release
Socialists launch cyber war on privatisation.
Socialists will make the fight against privatisation a central plank of their campaign for the Oxford East constituency, which launches its new web site today, in an effort to win the "cyber war" for the hearts and minds of local voters.
The site, www.oxfordsocialists.org.uk, will carry an expanding range of links to local and national campaigns and other Socialist Alliance organisations, and updated news of local events, as well as Socialist Alliance policies and press releases.
Socialist Alliance PPC John Lister, announcing that the site was now "live", stressed that the local campaign will cover a range of issues, but centre on three priorities:
"Privatisation, privatisation and privatisation. This government appears hooked on the idea that the private sector is somehow superior and better value than public services: but recent experience suggests the opposite," he said.
"In the NHS, yesterday’s report on Oxford hospitals shows that privatisation of support services means dirty wards, demoralised staff and poor quality care. Privatisation of hospital building schemes under the Private Finance Initiative has meant years of delays, higher costs, fewer beds, and less cash for front-line care: the new PFI cancer unit at the Churchill will not be built for five years – and who knows when the Radcliffe Infirmary relocation will happen, or how much it will really cost?
"On the railways, privatisation means chaos: unreliable, unsafe and expensive travel, with private profits subsidised by endless government handouts. Now Labour wants to privatise Air Traffic Control, bringing the nightmare prospect of a Hatfield in the skies.
"The Socialist Alliance is opposed to privatisation in all its forms, and actively committed to campaigning to keep public services under public ownership and control."
