We got to the final and despite a strong team it wasn't enough to beat Hoddeson. Solid wins from Gary and Steve were offset by a triumveral tragedy from John, Andrew and Phil ...
1. Gary Kenworthy 1-0 W.Stirling
2. John Sharp 0-1 W.Somerset
3. Steve Law 1-0 H.Tebbs
4. Andrew Gilfillan 0-1 T.Savanhu
5. Phil Gregory 0-1 T.Turner
6. Kevin Ellis ½-½ N.Rughwani

We had a full squad out tonight and it proved to be a fairly smooth transition into the Final to face Hoddesdon which will be an altogether more stern test. Gary beat his opponent without really breaking sweat - a typical clinical performance. Andrew quickly had a very good position after his opponent played e6/g6/Ne7 but allowed a knight to check at f6 ... it was soon over. Kevin pushed us further to our goal with a solid win and the result was wrapped up with a win from Phil and a (lucky) draw from John.
More good news is that Kevin's new job in the area and can continue to play for Hemel!
1. Gary Kenworthy 1-0

It was a close match but we lost in the end. Rod lost after some enterprising play from his opponent allowed his queen to penetrate. John got revenge against Simpson after a loss earlier in the season, but Steve fell to a knight sacrifice tactic which lost a pawn and his position soon became untenable. Andrew evened it all up with a pleasing game despite his opponent at one stage claiming touch move did not apply when he had less than 5 minutes. Hector valianted attempted to win but he lost on time where he positionally he was doing well.
1. John Sharp 1-0 A. Simpson

Finally the first team manage to win a match which takes us off bottom place, the crunch match will be against the (new) bottom placed team, St Albans 2 in March.
Steve lost quickly which put the pressure on but wins from Andrew, Phil and John steadied the boat and steered us to the magic 3 game points and a won match. In addition, Gary's adjoined position looks won (and he did win it!).

A very hard fought match in which we seemed to be gaining the upper hand at the end of the night Matthew won quite quickly but the other games remained unfinished. Hector,Adrian and myself are all material ahead, so hopefully we should win.

Again the first team are struggling however we were up against a strong St Albans team. We are relying on Kevin to win to draw the match.

The first team went down to a reasonably good Hoddesdon team, they had two new players on the top two boards to replace the missing Coleman. It started off badly with some sort of 'communication breakdown' and Kevin not turning up ... in addition the charms of Cavendish 2 were obviously too much for Phil despite our dire results so far ... Top board was lucky to win and his opponent became somewhat excited after the finish, while Andrew was winning but his opponent is a canny player who plays well in time scrambles and managed to draw. Steve and Rod were both doing at least OK but the former blundered and the latter overpressed.
So with Royston to play in the last match of 2000 things are not looking too good (so far!) however we learnt that Hertford have been knocked out of the Cup so there may still be a chance ofwinning something this year!
1. John Sharp 1-0 W. Stirling

A fresh venture for Hemel, our entry into the new knock out tournament for U100. Charles Phillips postitionally outplayed his opponent in masterly fashion. Then, as famously happened to Tigran Petrosian, a former world champion, left his queen en prise when contemplating the complexities of his greatly superior position. Andy Walker, playing his first game after a long break from chess, had better luck, sacrificing a pawn for a victorious attack. Bob Forst, with black withstood heavy pressure to gain a draw. So all depended on the top board. Here the other, junior Charles, lost a piece in a sharp opening but played on until he was forced to admit defeat.
Philip Gregory was the non playing captain and chauffeur.

2. Charles Phillips 0-1 S Zsitrinto

The first team continue to stumble their way through the first games of the season (come back Gary all is forgiven!) with a difficult match against the mighty St Albans 2 ... Phil won his adjournment but Board 1 is going to adjudication but doesn't look too promising, in fact given up ...

The first match of the season and we were up against the League Champions ... it started off well with a draw from Kevin and then a win from Phil which left it with the top 3 boards to hold on. Unfortunately it was not to be, both Steve and Andrew lost and John's adjourned position looks well dodgy ... which was resigned.
