17 April 2000 - HH2 vs Watford 3

An interesting match with Nigel posting a win before I arrived, then Adrian
chalked up number 2 with material advantage. Watford pulled back one with a
fine attacking game on board 1 which Hector couldn't hold. The final 2
positions looked dodgy in Rod's game but Tom was winning so this should be
another win for Hemel! Unfortunately not to be ... a draw ensued

1. Hector Steen 0-1 B. Concagh
2. Adrian Matthews 1-0 J. Riley
3. Rod Gibb 0-1 R. Kearns
4. Nigel Hoddinott 1-0 C. Russell
5. Tom Rixon ½-½ P. Andrews

                   2½-2½

10 April 2000 - HH 3 vs Watford 5

A bit of a comedy of errors ...

"It was 2-2 with just Bob's game left, he was defending and a pawn down, a
few moves later the material was level and the position looked complicated.
Bob attacked the queen and offered a draw which his opponent refused,
and then left the queen to be taken. Bob took the queen and the next move
the opponent offered a draw, which Bob naturally refused and captured
a bishop, this allow his opponent a mate in 2 a queen and piece down."

1. I.Hall 0-1 P.Edwards
2. P.Sargent 1-0 P.Abbott
3. M.Dignam 1-0 D.Healey
4. R.Forst 0-1 J.Thomas
5. F.Collisson 0-1 M.Sudlow
                -----
                 2-3

3 April 2000 - HH 2 vs Watford 2

                    2-3

27 March 2000 - HH 3 vs Stevenage 4

Another win for the third team, Matthew and Charles continue their
winning ways.

2. P.Sargent ½-½
3. M.Dignam 1-0
4. R.Forst 1-0

               -----
               3½-1½

27 March 2000 - HH 1 vs Watford 1

A good final result against Watford - just a shame we couldn't have done
this in the Cup ... Andrews opponent lost on time, but like the gentleman
who doesn't look down a woman's cleavage, Andrew didn't look at his
opponents clock - this happened in their previous encounter. The adjourned
position is interesting with John having the winning chances ... but it
actually turned out a lucky draw for Hemel with Watford missing a clear win!

1. John Sharp ½-½ Jerry Rudge
2. Andy Gilfillan ½-½ Jim Lumsden
3. Steve Law 1-0 Mike Boyce
4. Hector Steen 1-0 Barry Morris
5. Rod Gibb ½-½
                  -----
                  3½-1½

20 March 2000 - HH 3 vs Rothamsted

Third win in a row for Matthew Dignam! looks like he's going to win
the player of the year award for the second year running (bad luck Steve!).
The two adjournments rersulted in a 3-2 win, with Charles Phillips
continuing a good first season.

1. I. Hall 0-1 C. Dyer
2. P. Sargent ½-½ M. Brozicevic
3. M. Dignam 1-0 P.Tuck
4. R. Forst ½-½ T. Conquest
5. C. Phillips 1-0 S. Harding

13 March 2000 - HH 1 vs St Albans

Is 13 unlucky for some? well it was for us tonight ... it didn't start well
with train problems meaning Gary was not able to turn up, Rod Gibb came in
as reserve but found it tough against Simpson. My opponent (and myself)
played rather lazily the game finishing with Roe dropping a piece for nothing
(end of season fatigue?).

At this point Steve had quite a nice position and Andrew's was unclear ...
but it was not to be, Steve could only draw and Andrew lost on time with
one move to make ... well we cant get relegated so I don't suppose it matters
too much.

1. Rod Gibb (res) 0-1 A. Simpson
2. John Sharp 1-0 S. Roe
3. Andy Gilfillan 0-1 G. Hollis
4. Steve Law ½-½ N. Willmott
5. Kevin Ellis 0-1 J. Fraser-Mitchell

                    1½-3½

6 March 2000 - HH 2 vs Watford

1. Ian Hall 0-1 P. Littlefair
2. Paul Sargent ½-½ L. Roache
3. Matthew Dignam 1-0 J. Riley
4. Bob Forst 0-1 B. Coneagh
5. Charles Philips 0-1 R. Kearns
6. Francis Collison 0-1 C. Russell
                    -----
                    1½-4½

6 March 2000 - HH 2 vs Stevenage 2

The match stands at 1½-2½ for Stevenage and the adjournment looks drawish,
so not too hopeful for this match. The adjourned game was finally drawn
thus losing the match:

1. Hector Steen 0-1 C. Lean
2. Adrian Matthews ½-½ P. Bunce
3. Rod Gibb 0-1 E. Jones
4. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½ M. Price
5. Tom Rixon 1-0 R. Johnstone
                    -----
                     2-3

28 February 2000 - HH 1 vs Watford 1 Cup

The match is delicately poised at 1-1 with 4 games left ... since the night
Gary accepted a draw since his opponent could force it anyway, but disaster
struck when Andy lost a position we thought was winning! ... its looking
decidedly dodgy ... the board 2 game ended in a draw but it was a close run
thing, Lumsden would just not lie down and die!

1. Gary Kenworthy ½-½ Jerry Rudge
2. John Sharp ½-½ Jim Lumsden
3. Andy Gilfillan 0-1 Mike Boyce
4. Steve Law 1-0 Barry Morris
5. Kevin Ellis ½-½ Simon Charles
6. Phil Gregory DEF Bill Broome
                    -----
                    2½-3½

21 February 2000 - HH 2 vs Hertford 3

Hemel 2 look like winning the match, Adrian is clearly winning and Rod's
game is a dead draw. This continues the second teams good run and the clubs
as well.

1. Hector Steen 0-1 B.Toper (141)
2. Adrian Matthews ½-½ M.Thomas (137)
3. Rod Gibb ½-½ L.Noble (128)
4. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½ N.Jones (117)
5. Tom Rixon 1-0 D.Green (121)
                   -----
                   2½-2½

17 February 2000 - HH 1 vs Hoddesdon 1

A useful draw against a strong team, Kevin informs us that this makes it
impossible for us to be relegated now! This was a much better result for
them than the 4½-½ cross-buttocking we gave them last time! but they did
have their star player, Dave Coleman, back in the team.

There were quick (boring) draws on boards 4, 3 and then 1 which left it up
to Andrew and Rod to show us what they were made of. Unfortunately the
'Gilfillan Gambit' didn't quite work this time ... with Andy losing on time.
Rod kept up his very good record with a highly interesting game fluctuating
during mutual time trouble but with Rod winning in the end.

At this time in the season our results are:

Played 10 - Won 4 - Drawn 3 - lost 3

and with 2 relatively easy matches to go (St Albans and Watford) its looking
very good for us. We are also in the CUP with a match against Watford where
anything is possible!

The statistics show that the top scorers are Steve (7 pts)
and Andrew/John (4½ pts), whereas the top %'s are Rod (67%) and Steve (64%).

1. John Sharp ½-½ D. Coleman
2. Andrew Gilfillan 0-1 T. Turner
3. Steve Law ½-½ R. Turnham
4. Kevin Ellis ½-½ H. Tebbs
5. Rod Gibb 1-0 N. Rughwani
                    -----
                    2½-2½

14 February 2000 - HH 2 vs Letchworth 2

A good win for the second team, a successful start as captain for Tom Rixon!

1. Hector Steen 1-0 A. J. Ball
2. Adrian Matthews 0-1 I. Mutton (138)
3. Rod Gibb 1-0 S. Turner (121)
4. Nigel Hoddinott 1-0 M. Pateman (120)
5. Tom Rixon 0-1 D. Batey (111)

                     3-2

31 January 2000 - HH 3 vs Stevenage

An unfortunate loss to Stevenage in the Cup but a winning debut for
Charles Phillips.

1. I. Hall 1-0 M. Price
2. P. Sargent 0-1 G. Howard
3. T. Rixon 0-1 P. Gorman
4. C. Phillips 1-0 J. Lanaway
5. F. Collisson 0-1 A. Johnstone
                 -----
                  2-3

31 January 2000 - HH 2 vs Watford 2

Looks like a loss for the second team - so far no luck this season and
in fact the Captain, Dick Boardman, has resigned and 'retired' for the
season.

****POST MATCH NEWS: Tom Rixon has taken over as second team captain!****

1. H. Steen 0-1 S. Charles
2. A. Matthews ½-½ J. Tuffel
3. R. Gibb 1-0 P. Littlefair
4. R. Boardman 0-1 L. Roche

24 January 2000 - HH 1 vs Hertford

After beating Hertford in the cup it was only right and proper that we gave
them a lesson in the League. Things didn't start off (as usual) too brightly
in that our top board was not able to get to the match and defaulted on time.
So we were 1-0 down against a team who have lost rarely (if at all) in the
last few years ... but were we down-hearted? no!!!!

On top board we took a draw in a fairly boring position, at which point our
only decent position was (as usual) Steve's. Steve duly won his game and
is averaging with a grade in the 190's. Howard took a solid draw on bottom
board.

We were left with (as usual) Andy in a lost position ... however his opponent
had not reckoned with his cunning plan ... the so-called 'Gilfillan Gambit'
which involves getting into a lost position, thus enticing his opponent
into a false sense of security and (important one this) with no time on the
clock allowing him to blunder and then win!

So overall a fantastic result and safety is guaranteed and we can talk about
securing 3rd place behind Hertford and Royston

1. Gary Kenworthy DEF S. Knott
2. John Sharp ½-½ S. Swanson
3. Andy Gilfillan 1-0 P. Byway
4. Steve Law 1-0 B. Cheal
5. Hector Steen ½-½ A. Borman
                    -----
                     3-2

24 January 2000 - HH 3 vs Royston 3

Another good win for the third team which gives them 3 straight wins,
they are now moving up the table and with plenty of matches left things
are looking good! Matthew Dignam chalked up another win

1. Ian Hall 0-1 R. Mycroft 114
2. Paul Sargent ½-½ A. Mycroft 109
3. Tom Rixon 1-0 S. Cage
4. Matthew Dignam 1-0 J. Wholley 105
5. Bob Forst ½-½ D. Brown 59
                    -----
                     3-2

17 January 2000 - HH 1 vs Barnet

We entered the match with some trepidation ... since we had been smashed 5-0
in the home leg. Same team, same opponents but different result! Steve
uncorked a cracker to repeat a previous game(!) winning in style then
top board was a draw but with both players not playing particularly well,
and then Kevin lost when his opponent infiltrated from the back rank.

The remaining games didn't look too promising since Andy was in a worse
position with 2 minutes (to his opponents 30 minutes!) to finish the
whole game ... however he held his nerve and his opponent trying to out-blitz
him ruined his position and eventually lost. A tragic way to end (for them!).
Phil got the required draw to give the full points which surely makes our
survival in the top flight secure!

1. John Sharp ½-½ P. Georghiou
2. Andy Gilfillan 1-0 T. Gavriel
3. Steve Law 1-0 C. Karayiannis
4. Kevin Ellis 0-1 A. Ethelontis
5. Phil Gregory ½-½ C. Maduekwe

                     3-2

20 December 1999 - HH 1 vs Hertford CUP

The first team came up against the self-styled 'Premier' Hertfordshire
chess club in the Cup but we uncorked our new board 1 - Gary Kenworthy -
which was worth a point in surprise value.

The match initially proceeded along its normal lines with solid draws
from Gary, Rod and Phil against higher rated opposition, in fact we were
outgraded on all boards. A loss on board 2 looked like that was the end
for Hemel but Hertford hadn't reckoned with the 'old' stalwarts Steve and
Kevin who both proceeded to win and suddenly the 'Premier' team were
relegated to 'First Division' (at least for one match anyway).

So a fantastic end to the Millenium:

1. Gary Kenworthy ½-½ S. Knott
2. John Sharp 0-1 S. Swanson
3. Steve Law 1-0 P. Byway
4. Kevin Ellis 1-0 B. Cheal
5. Phil Gregory ½-½ A. Borman
6. Rod Gibb ½-½ G. Davies

                    3½-2½

13 December 1999 - HH 1 vs Royston

A bit of a battering for the first team against Royston even though we had a
stronger team than last time and could draw that match! so much for
gradings ... the only bit of goodnews was Steve continues his excellent form
chalking up another win. Actually Royston are shaping up to be a strong team,
D'Costa should be board 1 really. The division is getting stronger each year:

1. John Sharp 0-1 M. Walker
2. Andy Gilfillan 0-1 L. D'Costa
3. Steve Law 1-0 K. Clark
4. Kevin Ellis 0-1 S. Tovey
5. Phil Gregory 0-1 J. Denton
                    -----
                     1-4

6 December 1999 - HH 3 vs Watford 5

A 3½-1½ win and the third team are really motoring now!

1. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½
2. Ian Hall ½-½
3. Paul Sargent 1-0
4. Tom Rixon ½-½
5. Matthew Dignam 1-0

                    3½-1½

6 December 1999 - HH 1 vs Watford 1

The match is finely balanced with a possible dispute in the air ... on
board 2 Watford are claiming a win on time but the situation is ambiguous
and may need to go to the disputes committee. Steve's game is equal on
material but needs some study before deciding the way forward. On the
bottom board it Watford have the better of it but whether that is enough
to win is unclear.

The captains agreed to a drawn match after we offered 2 draws and a loss
which was a fair result:

1. John Sharp 1-0 J. Rudge
2. Andy Gilfillan 0-1 J. Lumsden
3. Steve Law ½-½ M. Boyce
4. Kevin Ellis ½-½ B. Morris
5. Hector Steen ½-½ C. Reams
                    -----
                    2½-2½

30 November 1999 - HH 3 vs Rothamsted

A 3-2 win and the third team are showing their true strength:

1. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½
2. Ian Hall ½-½
3. Paul Sargent 0-1
4. Tom Rixon 1-0
5. Matthew Dignam 1-0
                    -----
                     3-2

29 November 1999 - HH 1 vs St Albans 1

A good match against a team we must beat to ensure we stay in the first
division. As our match captain, Kevin Ellis, said if we can win this
match we will be in a very good position since both Watford and St Albans
have lost three matches already.

Andrew had a good controlled win on board 2 against a strong player and
Steve was offered the Greek Gift which he took (it was a bit like asking
Dracula if he would like to work in a blood bank!) giving his opponent a
lot of difficulties which he was unable to solve.

The adjournments look good on board 1 with possibilities of winning and
on board 5 it looks difficult in a rook ending a pawn down. We should
therefore at least draw the match. Phil managed to draw on bottom board
and the top board has been sent off to adjudication so a win is guaranteed
for the match. The adjudication came back a win in the end.

1. John Sharp 1-0 A. Simpson
2. Andy Gilfillan 1-0 G. Hollis
3. Steve Law 1-0 J. Fraser-Mitchell
4. Kevin Ellis 0-1 N. Willmott
5. Phil Gregory ½-½ M. Lexton
                    -----
                    3½-1½

22 November 1999 - HH 3 vs Barnet 4

A disappointing result for the third team which we would have expected to win
since we outgraded our opponents on all boards.

1. Nigel Hoddinott 0-1 I. Varecka
2. Ian Hall ½-½ P. Martin
3. Paul Sargent ½-½ H. Blank
4. Tom Rixon 1-0 G. Nunn
5. Matthew Dignam 0-1 D. Wilders
                    -----
                     2-3

15 November 1999 - HH 2 vs Watford 3

Another loss for the second team, albeit without some important players.

1. Rod Gibb 1-0 S. Smith
2. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½ A. Riley
3. Dick Boardman 0-1 B. Conagh
4. Ian Hall ½-½ R. Kearns
5. Tom Rixon 0-1 C. Russell
                    -----
                     2-3

8 November 1999 - HH 3 vs Barnet 3

No match report yet but the score stands at 1-2 with 2 adjournments where
it looks as though we will win one and lose one. As suspected we lost one
of the adjournments and it stands at 1-3 with good chances in the remaining
game. A report from the match captain gives the adjournment was won! which
changes the complexion of the match completely since now it is 2-2 with at
least a draw in the final game. Ended up a loss 2-3 ...

1. Ian Hall 0-1 S. Pepe
2. Paul Sargent 0-1
3. Tom Rixon 0-1 I. Varecka
4. Matthew Dignam 1-0
5. Bob Forst 1-0
                  -----
                   2-3

8 November 1999 - HH 1 vs Hoddesdon 1

A good solid performance from the first team, we need to win against the
likes of Hoddesdon to ensure we stay in the first division. A quick (9 move)
win from Phil got us off to a good start, there followed wins from Steve
against super-solid Howard Tebbs and Andrew with a neat rook sacrifice to
win. Kevin outplayed his opponent in a equal ending. The only fly in the
ointment was a draw on top board (from a won position) but this did not
affect the result.

1. John Sharp ½-½ T. Turner
2. Andrew Gilfillan 1-0 R. Turnham
3. Steve Law 1-0 H. Tebbs
4. Kevin Ellis 1-0 N. Rughwani
5. Phil Gregory 1-0 S. Weston
                    -----
                    4½-½

1 November 1999 - HH 2 vs Stevenage 2

The second team are 1½-2½ down with a single adjournment remaining where
Rod has some chances in an opposite coloured bishop ending but we need a
win to hold the match. Unfortunately Rod could only obtain a draw, so we
lost the match 3-2 ... but in fact Rod won so we drew the match!

1. Phil Gregory 1-0 C. Lean
2. Rod Gibb 1-0 D. Price
3. Dick Boardman ½-½ P. Bunce
4. Ian Hall 0-1 L. Jones
5. Tom Rixon 0-1 M. Price
                 -----
                 2½-2½

26 October 1999 - HH 1 vs Hertford 1

A hard fought match against the Champions where we came ever so close to
holding them to a draw - the psychological shock of actually turning up
almost got us a result. In fact it is probably easier to park at the Dome
than at Hertford but we did manage to find somewhere in the end.

A solid draw from Rod against a higher graded opponent set us on the way,
with Phil repeating this to ensure we got at least 1 game point.

Kevin had a long hard game but couldn't hold on - a bad position against a
200 rated player = slow squeeze until the pips squeak. Steve had a very
interesting game against Swanson where he came close to drawing but there
was not quite enough.

On board 1 John was able to produce his best result ever against a strong
FM (215) in a good game where his opponent fell short on time in a
complicated position and wasn't able to find the right moves.

1. John Sharp 1-0 S. Knott
2. Steve Law 0-1 S. Swanson
3. Kevin Ellis 0-1 P. Byway
4. Phil Gregory ½-½ B. Cheal
5. Rod Gibb ½-½ P. Borman
                  -----
                   2-3

18 October 1999 - HH 2 vs Letchworth 2

The second team continued their campaign with the match result standing at
1½-1½ and 2 adjournments. The two adjournments were only able to give us
½ point and thus we lost the match 2-3.

1. Hector Steen 1-0 P. Gardner
2. Rod Gibb 0-1 T. Ball
3. Nigel Hoddinott ½-½ I. Mutton
4. Dick Boardman 0-1 D. Parrot
5. Ian Hall ½-½ S. Turner
                    -----
                     2-3

11 October 1999 - HH 1 vs Barnet 1

A full squad against one of the top teams but to no avail ... we have been
well and truly clobbered, they were 25 minutes late ... maybe we should
have started the clocks and then we may have had a chance! They should win
the prize for the most interesting names award again this year. To cap off
a miserable match we lost the remaining adjourned games for a 0-5 loss -
oh well better luck next time ...

1. John Sharp 0-1 P. Georghiou
2. Andy Gilfillan 0-1 T. Gavriel
3. Steve Law 0-1 C. Karayiannis
4. Kevin Ellis 0-1 A. Ethelontis
5. Phil Gregory 0-1 C. Maduekwe
                    -----
                     0-5

11 October 1999 - HH 3 vs Stevenage 4

The third team kicked off their season against Stevenage and the match is
finely balanced. Young Matthew Dignam continuing with his winning form from
last year and Tom Rixon supplying the other point. Paul drew his game which
brought home a drawn match which is a little disappointing considering the
grades of the opposition.

1. Nigel Hoddinott 0-1
2. Ian Hall 0-1
3. Paul Sargent ½-½
4. Tom Rixon 1-0
5. Matthew Dignam 1-0
                    -----
                    2½-2½

4 October 1999 - HH 2 vs Barnet 2

Currently all level with 1½ points each with the remaining games on
boards 1 and 2 probably drawn. Rod's game was 'interesting', clearly
lost he fought back to win - a case of his opponent snatching defeat
from the jaws of victory! Hector has agreed a draw bringing the match
to 2-2 with Phil's game remaining. Phil draw the final game securing
the drawn match

1. Phil Gregory ½-½ M. Camillery
2. Hector Steen ½-½ D. J. Wright
3. Adrian Matthews ½-½ N. Wright
4. Rod Gibb 1-0 G. Glavoonus
5. Dick Boardman 0-1 M. C.Jones
                    -----
                    2½-2½

27 September 1999 - HH 1 vs Royston 1

Currently 0-2 with 3 games adjourned, Boards 3 and 4 look advantageous
to HH 1 with the top board interesting. Phil has won his game on board 4
making it 1-2. Andrew had a quick draw in his adjournment after 7 moves -
a long way to travel by his opponent for 7 moves. We have won the final
game and drawn the match which is a very useful point

1. Andy Gilfillan ½-½ M. Walker
2. Steve Law 0-1 L. D'Costa
3. Kevin Ellis 1-0 S. Tovey
4. Phil Gregory 1-0 K. Clark
5. Hector Steen 0-1 J. Denton
