The first super-tournament of the year was another success for Anand
(IND) 8½/13 at Wijk aan Zee, Holland

year the talking point was the incredible result of Carlsen (NOR)
10½/13 in winning the GM C tournament thus gaining a GM norm at the
tender age of 13!
The oldest chess tournament ran again at Hastings,

with a slightly unexpected winner in the shape of Rowson (SCO) 6/9. Last
years winner Nielsen (DEN) could only manage fifth place. Reports can be

Another traditional tournament took place in Reggio Emilia , Italy (official website) which was the 46th
edition where Miladinovic (GRE ) 7/9 was victorious. The

Short (ENG) 7½/9 was crowned the Commonwealth Champion
after winning at Mumba , India (official website). The

The UK 4NCL league (official

Betsson.com taking the lead from Wood Green (Table).
An interesting six-player double round tournament took place in
Bermuda (official website) where Vescovi
(BRA) 7/10 just beat Gelfand 6½/10 to the title. The

There was a new tournament which finished in Febrary which took place in
Gibralter (official website) with many
GMs from England and India; including Short (ENG), Speelman (ENG), Harikrishna
(IND) and Sandipan (IND), as well as the ubiquitous Dreev (RUS). It signalled
another success for Short (ENG) 8/10 who appears to be regaining his
appetite to return top-flight chess after a sabbatical of a few years. TWIC

The German Championship, Hoeckendorf (official website) took place which
saw Graf (GER) 7½/9 win by a whole point from Gustafsson (GER)

Round of the Bundesliga took place (official website) with both
Porz and Baden-Oos winning both matches it has become a two horse
race for these two super-teams for the title. See

What is likely to be the strongest Open tournament took place in
Moscow, Russia (official website) with a tie between
Rublevsky (RUS), Vaganian (ARM) and Filippov (RUS) on 7/9. Rublevsky
(RUS) won on tie-break and the games can be found at
