Coulsdon Chess Fellowship was crammed full of young chess talent as the battle for the titles was undertaken in the final of the 2003 English Chess Challenge. The players came from far and wide and battled hard for the 13 trophies that were there for the taking on the day. One of the most notable things of the day, as reported at the prize giving was excellent behaviour of all of the players - not one problem between anyone during the day for the organisers to deal with for which we are very grateful and wish again to thank everyone accordingly.
The winners were:
UNDER 15 BOYS: Richard O'Neill (De Stafford)
UNDER 13 BOYS: James
Foster (Cumnor House Prep)
UNDER 13 GIRLS: Marie Harman (Woodcote High)
UNDER 11 BOYS: Tom Varghese (Park Hill Juniors)
UNDER 11 GIRLS: Carolyn
Barker (Coulsdon C of E Primary)
UNDER 10 BOYS: Robert Maguire (Ashburton
Juniors)
UNDER 10 GIRLS: Sheila Dines (Old Palace)
UNDER 9 BOYS: James

UNDER 9 GIRLS: Yasmin Kasim (Glendower

UNDER 8 BOYS: Keith Barker (Coulsdon C of E Primary)
UNDER 8
GIRLS: Caroline Foster (Wolsey Juniors)
UNDER 7 BOYS: James McMillan
(Essendene Lodge Prep)
UNDER 7 GIRLS: Angharad Lee (St Teresa's)
Congratulations to all of these players. Special mention to Robert Maguire who wins for the 3rd year in a row. Also to Sheila Dines and Yasmin Kasim who retain their titles. Also to James Side, who wins his 2nd title having won his section 2 years ago.
Entries for the English Chess Challenge are invited and welcome from any school in England and the expected range of the tournament next year will, with CCF trained schools alone, cover a number of counties across the South-East of England.

Essex CA have been invited to host this year's BCF u18 Championships, which will take place at the Saffron Walden County High School, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden on Saturday 28th June 2003. This will be the Mixed (12 board) event only: the Girls' event will be held elsewhere.
The event will be organised as a 2 round jamboree in which each player will have 65 minutes per game. The starting times for the rounds will be 1.30 p.m. and 3.50 p.m.
The venue is within easy reach of the M11 and is only about 90 minutes' drive from Birmingham, 2½ hours from Yorkshire. If approaching from the south, leave the M11 at junction 8 and head west towards Hertford (A120). Take the second exit at the first roundabout, and the third exit at the second roundabout, about a mile after the first (B1383). Carry straight on through Stansted Mountfitchet, Ugley, Quendon and Newport, eventually reaching a right turn (B1052, signposted Saffron Walden). Take this right turn and continue until you reach a mini-roundabout, at which you turn left. The school is on your left.
If approaching from the north, leave theM11 at junction 9. Take the B184 southwards and almost immediately take the B1383 at the Stump Cross roundabout. Follow the B1383 through Great Chesterford and Littlebury Green and take the left turn immediately after seeing the massively impressive Audley End House on your left. Follow the road up the hill and the school is on your right.
If travelling by rail, leave the train at Audley End station. We will organise lifts for rail passengers from the station to the venue (unless you prefer to walk - it's about 1½ miles).
Yours sincerely, Peter Walker

I would be grateful if you advice your members both adult and junior of the 3rd Little Heath Christmas Fun Tournament on Saturday 22nd December at Little Heath Parish Hall, Thornton Road, Little Heath, Potters Bar.
The event runs from 11:00 to 17:00 as a six round Swiss with 25 minutes for all moves. Juniors under 14 compete in one section but will be paired against similar ages where possible. Older juniors and adults compete in their own section.
The emphasis is on fun so there are prizes at the beginning of each round drawn at random, a free Christmas tea and optional fancy dress. The event will not be graded so it's a great chance to experiment.
Further details and entry forms are available from me.
Many thanks

To Gale Tomlinson, The Gazette, Hemel Hempstead:
As promised on the telephone I am sending you information about the success of local boys and girls in the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire 'Megafinal' of this competition. You will recall that the UK Chess Challenge, sponsored by British Land, is the largest chess tournament in the world with over 39,000 school children taking part throughout the UK.
As your readers will know, Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Chess Club held a tournament at Lime Walk School on 24 March to give local children the chance to participate. The next stage of the competition, a 'Megafinal' involving 206 schoolchildren from all over Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, took place yesterday at the John Henry Newman School in Stevenage.
The following local children qualified for the National final- the 'Gigafinal' - in Sheffield on Sunday 15 July.
Michael Turnball Goldfield School was joint boys runner up in the under
7 section.
Thomas Lord, Albert the Great School, was the 'supremo' (the
boys winner) in the under 10 section.
In the under 13s, Matthew Dignam
(Chesham High, lives in Berkhamsted ) was the supremo and Thomas Whiddett
(Cavendish School) also qualified for the Gigafinal.
In the under 15s,
Selina Kanji (Haberdasher's Askes' for Girls, lives in Kings Langley) was a
joint girls runner up , and Charles Davie (Verulam Boys, lives in Reborn) also
qualified.
Special congratulations are due to Matthew Dignam and Thomas Lord for winning their age section against tough competition from the best in the two counties.
It would be appreciated if you could remind readers that Hemel Hempstead Chess Club runs a chess club for children every Monday in May (except Bank Holidays) at 6.30pm at Gadebridge Community Centre in Galley Hill. The club will then close for the summer but be open in September. Anyone wanting further details should contact me on my home number 01442 24260.

Is there ANYBODY in the County of Buckinghamshire who would be prepared to organise and manage a County Girls team (U14, 6 members) to play in the English Counties Girls Chess Federation inter-county competition?
There are only about 2 fixtures per year - and we could start you off with something very gentle!
Have a look at our website at http://ecgcf.da.ru or email us at sgcl@clara.net
The girls are there, just waiting for someone to sort them out!

You may have learned of the death of Mitchell Taylor, long-time Chief
Conductor of the Times School Chess Championship. Mitchell had not been well
for some time but was determined to continue organising the competition as long
as possible. His passing has created some temporary organisational
difficulties.
The 2000/2001 Times Schools Championship will take place
and on this occasion may be regarded as a fitting tribute to Mitchell
Taylors memory.
NEW CONDUCTOR
Richard Haddrell has
offered to control this years event.
The immediate
difficulties for me are:
1. The entries have gone to Mitchells
address.
2. I have no documentation giving contact details of Zone
Conductors, copies of information sent to participating schools, guidance notes
on the conduct/organisation of the event etc.
3. Some schools have not
received entry forms.
Actions taken on the above:
1.
Stephanie Taylor, Mitchells daughter, is putting her fathers papers
in order and will send all appropriate documents to me as soon as she is ready.
Entries held by Stephanie will be passed on to Richard Haddrell.
2. By
various means we are trying to establish an accurate list of Zones and Zone
Conductors.
3. A new entry form is appended. There is no need to return it
if you have already entered.
The start date of the competition will be
delayed. I think the first round is likely to be in November.
URGENT!!- If you are a Zone Conductor or know someone who is, could you
send contact details to Richard: 01892 532361
rjh@sccu.ndo.co.uk
Teams are of six players, who must all be pupils of the school they
represent.
Age limit: Under 19 on the 31st August 2000.
To encourage
younger teams, an age handicap applies.
Enquiries to Richard Haddrell by
phone or email.
