Version History:
Draft 0C 30th June 1998 Incorporating corrections and comments from Mike Keaney
Draft 0B 21st June 1998 Sound and Rhythm sections added
Draft 0A 13th June 1998 John's first attempt
These notes are intended to assist visually impaired musicians to use the Technics KN3000 keyboard without reference to menus or messages which appear on the screen display.
Many such musicians are capable of excellent performances on the KN3000 but there are limits to the available keyboard settings they can control independently. This document sets out to increase that range of independence. It may prove impossible to access every feature in this way but with the help and ingenuity of many contributors we may get close.
When finished this text will be made available freely in the public domain. It may be used in any form including being read by computers with speech synthesisers for the purpose defined above. No charge shall be made for this work and the author John Shute and all contributors shall not be liable for any harm or damage arising from its use. In case of doubt the retailer or manufacturer should be contacted.
Readers are warmly invited to contribute additional information; to critically review the content and presentation of this document and to check for precise accuracy of content by following these instructions on a KN3000 and reporting any discrepancy to:
john.shute@virgin.net
My own instrument is the KN2000. I do not have access to a KN3000 hence my appeal to those of you who do.
Special thanks:
to the kind people at the Reading, Berkshire branch of MODERN MUSIC who loaned a KN3000 manual to start this project.
to Alan Paganelli of Nevada whose appeal for this Product Information (27th May 1998 in the Technics Forum) inspired this project.
to Mike Keaney of Virginia for his encouragement, support, corrections and contributions.
to TECHNICS for producing a superb range of instruments and providing the Forum at:
http://www.technics.com/talkback/index.html
and thanks in advance to the email contributors of information from around the world whose names will appear here.
There are 10 buttons associated with the display - a vertical row of five each to the left and right of the screen. These buttons are used to select the item of text which appears on the screen next to the button. There are eight volume control up/down button pairs below the display which are involved in some selections.
Here we will name the side buttons L1 to L5 and R1 to R5. I define L1 as the top left button and R5 as the bottom right button. Note that when the number of options in a sub-menu is small only the centre area of the display might be used. As an example, four options might use only L2-L4 and R2 as valid buttons.
I define the volume pairs as V1 to V8 from left to right. V1 is beside the round Display Hold button. The volume buttons are small squares and labelled Drums, Accomp3, Accomp2, Accomp1, Bass, Left, Right2, Right1. The top row of buttons is "increase" and the lower row is "decrease". Next there is a further pair of similar sized but rounded buttons marked Page and then the round Exit button.
MENU BUTTONS
There are eight dedicated menu buttons which are used to select the function of the display.

Sounds are assigned separately to the left and right parts of the keyboard. Two selections can be stored for the right of the keyboard (Right 1 and Right 2) and the active one can be selected during a performance.
To assign a sound first select one of the three Part Select buttons Left, Right 2 or Right 1, choose a sound group and then an instrument sound within that group.
There are two rows of eight buttons in the sound group. They are located at the extreme right of the keyboard and approximately central. Each button relates to a set of 20 instruments. The choice of one instrument within the set is selected from the screen menu.
When a sound group button is pressed the screen displays the options for the first ten sounds in that group. The second set of ten is called up with the PAGE DOWN button (the lower of the end pair of "volume controls" below the display).
From left to right the keys in the top row of the sound group are:

There are two rows of buttons in the rhythm group. They are located at the extreme left of the keyboard and approximately central. Seven are in the top row and eight in the lower row. Buttons are rectangles except there is a rounded outer vertical edge of the buttons at the ends of each row.
Each button relates to a set of between six and ten rhythms. The choice of one rhythm within the set is selected from the screen menu. When a rhythm group button is pressed the screen displays the options for all the rhythms in that group.

This is probably less than 10% of the screen menus - but it's a start!
Contributions are invited for any of the missing sub-menus (these are not illustrated in the manual). It would also be very helpful if anyone has ideas about finding starting conditions on a menu, e.g. a button might toggle a function ON/OFF each time it is pressed, but how can you be sure to set it ON?
Before embarking on any lengthy work please send an email to check if anyone else is working in your area. However large all small, your help will be greatly appreciated.
