"I have not heard many versions of Schoenberg's expressionist string masterpiece, Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) that have been more polished than the one performed last night by Jonathan Rees's Scottish Ensemble. I have certainly not heard an un-conducted performance of the work that approached the Scottish Ensemble's in balance and integration.

And, from a strictly personal point of view (writing as an addict of this thoroughgoing masterpiece) it's a long time since I heard a performance that so illuminated the shifting moods and colours of the work. Incredibly alert to the dynamics of the work, sensitive to its textures (which, in too many accounts are allowed to accumulate to a state of romantic fog) and wholly committed right through the texture - superb playing - this was a performance suffused with concentration."
