International Women's Day

Lady members of the Hamilton Speakers' Club took part in an event to mark international Women's Day on the 12th of March . It was hosted by South Lanarkshire Council at Hamilton race-course.Two members gave speeches during the event..
The first speaker was Inez McLearie, who gave a 12 minute speech entitled "Facing the Feminine Challange". This speach set out the progress of women, from the struggles of the early part of the last century to challanges of the present-day.
Anne Murray's speech, entitled "Six Women of Distintion", outlined the activities of Marie Stokes, Claudia Jones, Barbara Castle, Millicent Garnet-Anderson and Elcanor Rathbone.
Rita Little and Marjory Kirkwood manned the Hieton Writers' Group's stall.

 
   

   

The 2009 Burns Supper

Burns Supper January2009   President Colin Jones welcomed the Club members and their guests to the Club's annual
Burns Supper, which was held at the Riccarton Golf Club on Friday the 23rd of January.
His top table guests were Mrs Betty Clancey, President of the Soroptimist International Hamilton, she replied to the "Toast to the Lasses" Betty was accompanied by her husband Gerry.
Grace Whitton,Past President of the Olifard Society, gave the reply to the "Toast to our Guests"
Elizabeth Wiper, the singer and long time friend of the Club provided the music for the evening
The following club members also took part. Sam Waugh delivered "The toast to the Haggis".
Jim Elliot gave the "Immortal Memory"; Bill McMullan proposed "The Toast to the Lasses" and Marjory Kirkwood proposed the "Toast to our Guests". John Dickson gave an exellent rendition of "Tam O' Shanter". The piper for the evening was Jim Hughes, who piped in the Haggis and also played a selection of tunes later in the evening. Finally new member Carol McPherson provided the vote of thanks.
A very successful evening was rounded off by a rendition of " Auld Lang Syne .

Burns Supper 2008

 

Burns Night February 2008 John Dickson giving the "Toast to the Haggis" at the Club's Burns night on Friday the 1st of February 2008. The "Imortal Memory" given by Tom Carson, a song by Liz Wiper, the "Toast to the Lassies" by John McNamee and the reply was given by Lynette Jardine of the Olifards Society. David Gemmell gave the readings. After a break for the raffle, we had the "Toast to the Guests from Sam Waugh, the reply by Mrs Betty Clancy of the Soroptimist International. Liz and David gave us some more poetry and songs and finally Bill Russell the Club's newest member gave a vote of thanks.
 

 

Our Sergeant at Arms Anne Murray carried the Haggis to the kitchen as it was piped to the Kitchen by Piper Jim Hughes as the meal was about to be served. We had a good night at the Fire Station Headquarters in Hamilton.


The Past President's Night

2007

 

  This evening is a tradition in the Club and is an evening when the Past Presidents entertain the other Club Members. This year the theme was a "Who Done It" night. Past President Marjory was found guilty, unfortunatly she is not in the photograph. It was a good night and was organised by Past President Tom Carson.
