MEET THE BAND!
THE 'FIFTY YEARS' CLUB
Mr.T.C.B.STEVENS Brian is the present conductor of the band and attains his 50 year status in 2003. He became a member in 1953, having been taught to play by Rushworth Harry. The Musical Director, at the time, was Capt. A.G.Richards. Brian started on 2nd. Baritone, and soon progressed to1st, then 2nd. Euphonium and on to Principal Euphonium from 1957 to 1996. He competed in numerous contests, plus solo and quartet successses. Brian was always in demand, as guest player, for local bands. He was Principal Euphonium when the band qualified for the National Championships in '69 and won the 'Best Player' award in the CBBA contests, 4th.section, 1989. He took part in two London protest marches - one against the closure of Cornish tin mines in 1986, and the other in support of local hospitals in 1997. As well as conducting the band, Brian is constantly active teaching young players, which he has done since 1979. He was appointed Musical Director in 1996. Brian's wife, Christine, (see below) started playing on tenor horn in 1962 and is now 1st. Baritone. She has been a band 'stalwart' over the years, as Assistant Secretary and is always willing to help out with any facet of band work. |
Mr.R.O.HARRY Rushworth joined the band at the age of eleven and has worked constantly, on their behalf, ever since. He started out on the tenor horn, baritone and euphonium, having a good start in musical knowledge by taking piano lessons with John Williams, the Church organist. There was a break during the war, while serving in the Merchant Navy for seven years. On his return to Pendeen he soon started a junior band bringing on such members as Brian Stevens, Claude Nicholas and George Lawry - who all became conductors themselves. Rushworth also played with local bands and enjoyed much success with Pendeen in the contest field winning many prizes. He proudly led the band through the streets of London in 1986, demonstrating against Cornish tin mine closures - a notable occasion! Now happily retired in Pendeen with his wife Joan, he is still very much involved as band Chairman. Joan has also assisted the band in many areas over the years, mainly as secretary, and is still really active today as Vice President. *******
