Britain is a country surrounded by water. To make the journey back into the harbour safer to seafarers, lighthouses have been built along the coastline to guide them.

Lighthouses can be classified into three categories:

- Tower or Rock lighthouses

- Island lighthouses

- Shore or land lighthouses

Administration of the lighthouses is shared between 3 authorities: Trinity House Lighthouse Service for lighthouses in England and Wales, Northern Lighthouse Board for Scottish lighthouses and the Commission of Irish Lights for lighthouses overlooking Irish waters.
