31 May 2003 solar eclipse

This eclipse was not given as much media attention as the one in 1999, but it was nevertheless worth watching.  The moon was due to move between the earth and the rising sun, so a very early start was necessary.

We got up and walked to to cliffs of Muchalls while it was still dark. There was a slight haze, but otherwise no clouds. We stood in anticipation, searching the horizon for any sign of change.

It took a few minutes until we could actually see anything, as the moon was obscuring the sun while she was rising. By the time it was possible to see anything, the sun was up relatively high in the sky.

It is 04:52, you can see the moon in front of the sun.  The air has become very still

05:09 and the sun is nearly completely visible.  If you look carefully you can make out the red of the rising sun reflecting in the water
