The Bombardier Beetle - or, Shooting Yourself in the Foot

A common enough anti-evolutionary standby is the Bombardier Beetle. I’ve even seen it in fairly sober Old Earth Creationist books. For the benefit(?) of those fortunate souls who haven’t heard it, it goes like this:

We will, for now, ignore the spuriousness of this argument, the fallacies and the plain errors. These are adequately dealt with at the Talk Origins Archive. But might I add in passing what a fine example this is of Creationist misunderstanding, scientific error and simplistic argument?

The reason why creationists have shot themselves in the foot is this. They have demonstrated, they maintain, that the beetle must have been designed by God. It has this wonderful defence system that cannot possibly have evolved, so God must have built it.

They also maintain that there was no death, predation etc. before the Fall.

What did God design the Bombardier Beetle’s defence system for, given that He didn’t intend there to be anything it needed to defend itself against?
