A Small Working Farm

As part of our aim to become “self-sufficient” a vegetable garden was a real must have item.

As the farm is set on a hillside building the garden was going to be a bit of a challenge.

We decided that raised beds with paths in between would be the best option to overcome the difficulties of the slope. We picked our area and then started to dig. It took months to get the area cleared and the beds in place but they were finally finished early last year.

Then came the paths. I ordered a lorry load of slate chippings from a local quarry and they delivered it onto the car park. Now came the problem of getting it from the car park to the vegetable garden. Due to the weather conditions our very old two wheel drive tractor would not cope, it was sliding all over the place.

Next we hired a tele-handler, this could not cope either, it could not get into the field because of the mud, so we had to have the slate dropped into the small paddock area close to the vegetable garden and then wheel-barrow it about 300 yards.

My sister and brother-in-law made the fatal mistake at this time of paying us a visit so they were both coerced into working on the barrow and rake to finish the paths. This was also accomplished by providing plenty of beer to keep them going.

Greenhouse

Siting the greenhouse was a big problem, we are very exposed to winds and there is the slope to deal with. My Dad and his fiancé helped out for a week end. We had to dig down about three foot at the back and shutter up about two foot at the front to get it level. Then we had to mix the concrete on the car park and bring it round with a bucket on the front of the quad bike. Took two whole days and lots of beer but the base was finally finished.

It took me another three months to get around to putting up the green house and putting all the glass in but this has just been finished and I have just planted my first seeds. There is nothing nicer than pottering in a greenhouse when it’s raining outside.
