Sheep
Our first investment was a small flock of sheep consisting of six ewes and a ram who we named “Rudy”.
Our first year of lambing was fraught with difficulties—not least down to our lack of experience. We had read up on every book on sheep keeping that we could get hold of but there is no substitute for experience.
We were lucky enough to make friends with a local farmer who was not only willing but eager to give us lots of advice and, even better, assistance with things like injections (what, when and why), shearing, feet clipping and lambing. There is certainly more to keeping sheep than putting them into the field and letting them get on with it.
Our flock soon extended with the purchase of two pens of Texel ewes and a new ram — unfortunately Rudy passed away after tupping with a smile on his face, must have been too much excitement for the old boy.
