There are many major local attractions. Blandford, just
five minutes drive, boasts some of the finest Georgian buildings in the
country. A lovely example is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. The
museum offers lots of local interest.

Milton Abbas has a beautiful collection of thatched
cottages. The Tudor
cottages of Cerne Abbas with its famous giant, measuring 180ft, carved in
the chalk hillside. Dorset is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, the celebrated
novelist. Max Gate at Brockhampton was his last abode and is a popular place
to while away an afternoon. Dorchester, the largest local town, enjoys a
bustling market each Wednesday. There are many shops, restaurants and bars
The County Museum is very popular together with several more including
Tutankhamun and the Military Museum. Maiden Castle is positioned on the
northern exit of the town, dating from the Iron Age, this is a marvellous
example of a prehistoric fort. Dorchester hospital is 200 yards away!
Beautiful Athelhampton House is a short journey
further. A very attractive 15th century building, giving a wonderful look
into the past. Magnificant gardens with feature fountains provide a restful
visit.
Historic Tolpuddle famous for the Martyrs gives another
"must visit" attraction.
Shaftesbury with the famous Gold Hill, which features
in the Hovis advertisement, is just 30 mins drive away.
Dorset's Jurassic coastline gives some of the most
breath-taking views along Chesil beach with the lovely Purbeck Hills in the
background.
The gorgeous blue star beaches of Bournemouth and Poole
can be reached in just 30mins. Both towns offer extensive shopping
precincts, many restaurants, bars and night clubs.
Other lovely beaches can be found at Weymouth, and a
few miles further down the coast lies the renowned swannery of Abbotsbury.
During the nesting season, which runs from May through June, hundreds of
swans and cygnets can be seen close at hand.
Lulworth Cove boasts beautiful quiet beaches, and Corfe
Castle with an intriguing history must be on your list of visits.
