A basic single room in a central London hotel costs from GBP60 per night. From late June to early September, university halls of residence are open to public. They are often centrally located and more economical than a hotel.

Long term students
Generally, overseas students would stay with a London family for the first 2~3 months of their arrival. After getting used to the life in London and the language, they would on to flatshare or living alone.

Flatshare can be found through word of mouth, newspaper adverts such as Loot and Evening Standard, and accommodation agencies.

A room in a shared flat/house costs from GBP80 per week plus utility bills and council tax. You will usually have your own furnished bedroom, shared kitchen, bathroom and lounge. When you move in, usually you will pay a deposit (equivalent of four weeks rent) and four weeks rent in advance.

One bedroom flat in central London costs from GBP250 per week plus bills. Elsewhere in London, the rent starts around GBP150.

PERSON BEHIND KOKO PROMOTIONS

Koko Promotions is run by Kyoko Speechley.
Having left Japan in 1966, Kyoko trave
led around the world before settling in London.

Left, Kyoko Speechley (early 80s)

In the late 70s, a friend introduced her to Japanese hairdressers who came to London to study hairdressing. Kyoko started interpreting for Vidal Sassoon when Fire Fly and Wedge were taught in the Advanced Academy. Touring Japan with the Vidal Sassoon team left her with fond memories, though it was very hard both ways, working and playing!

As an interpreter specialising in hairdressing, Kyoko has worked at every hairdressing schools in London including Toni&Guy, Jingles, Trevor Sorbie Academy, London Hair Academy, Ginger Academy and Alan International. (Sadly, the latter three no longer exist). Inundated with job offers, she started introducing other interpreters to hairdressing schools and students, gradually establishing herself as an agent.

Interpreting on stage
Since retiring from interpreting in the mid-90s, she's become a coordinator of courses and interpreters for Japanese hairdressers/students. KOKO welcome inquiries and bookings from non-Japanese as well.
