How patients are diagnosed

A traditionally trained Acupuncturist will assess the patient's general state of health to identify the underlying patterns of disharmony (syndromes) according to the principles and theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Within TCM the following are considered potential causes of disease:

  • Environmental factors ( Cold, Heat, Damp, Summer Heat, Dryness, Wind)
  • Emotional factors (Fear, Fright, Worry, Pensiveness, Anger, Joy, Sadness, Grief )
  • Miscellaneous factors ( Constitution, Life Style, Work, Exercise, Diet, Sexual Activity, Epidemics and Wrong Treatment )

A traditionally trained practitioner needs to ensure that they obtain sufficient information during the consultation in order to devise a suitable treatment plan.

In TCM the diagnostic process consists of four parts:

  • Looking
  • Hearing and Smelling
  • Questioning
  • Palpating
