The Beamish Visitor Centre is located at the foot of the hill housing the large car park. At the entrance to the visitor centre is an example of a typical Chaldron Wagon which was used to transport coal around the region.
Inside the Visitor Centre is a visitors reception area, a souvenir shop, a cafe and toilet facilities.
Beamish is a large open air museum covering some 300 acres, and all areas can be accessed by tram, bus or on foot. You will need to spend at least half a day to appreciate the museum. Most people, however, would want to spend a whole day to take in the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age.
Once inside the museum all exhibits are free (except for the Funfair which has modest charges). The only other chargeable items are for food, drink and confectionery. There are also several places in which to picnic should you wish to cater for yourself.
On busy days (mainly afternoons) some of the queues may be lengthy for some of the exhibits e.g. the Drift Mine has a limit on the numbers of visitors entering the pit for safety reasons. There are also occasional queues for the Tram Rides - although trams run every 20 minutes in each direction around the museum.
Please visit the museum and have a truly memorable day, thousands already have.
