This is the true story of a Croatian war child, given away at four to an aunt and uncle, imprisoned with her relatives at 13. Her father managed to secure her freedom, only to be imprisoned himself, then shot. All the other prisoners perished in Auschwitz. She spent the rest of the war hungry in a convent orphanage. Her mother, having fallen in love with an Englishman before the war, came to live in this country in 1938.
