This is the true story of a Croatian war child, given away at four to an aunt and uncle, imprisoned with her relatives at 13. Her father managed to secure her freedom, only to be imprisoned himself, then shot. All the other prisoners perished in Auschwitz. She spent the rest of the war hungry in a convent orphanage. Her mother, having fallen in love with an Englishman before the war, came to live in this country in 1938.
Verica writes: "All that winter of 1946, I was happy at last. I was back in school and had a home with another aunt. However, I had a big decision to make: my mother lives in England and I don't know a word of English. She is almost a stranger to me. Do I join her?"
"It is impossible not to be moved and inspired by your absorbing story."
