I found your message board while looking for information on Lakenheath Village. I lived in Lakenheath from 1969 until 1973.
My father was stationed at Mildenhall, AFB While reading the previous posts I had to smile. I too remember Lou and his horses. The Flack name was prominent. I lived at that time on Anchor Lane and an elderly gentleman lived down the street who's name was Flack. He would stand at the corner of Anchor Lane and High Street with his cane, watching people walk by. Mr. Flack's nephew who was also Mr. Flack owned the home we rented on Anchor Lane. That Mr. Flack owned a shop on High Street.
My best friend at that time was a young girl named Pam Morley. Her father owned a pub on High Street. If anyone knows her whereabouts I'd love to know how she is doing. Another of my fond memories was a general store on High Street where I would go in and help the lady that owned it after school and weekends. She had just about everything in her store and I loved spending time in there. I don't know if I was much help, I think she just knew I loved being in there. Those days are treasures to me and I feel I'm very fortunate to have lived in such a wonderful community as Lakenheath Village.
Sincerely,
Regina Garrison, Muskogee, Oklahoma U.S.A.

I lived in the same road a Lou (Avenue road) for a few years, as everyone
has pointed out Lou was quite a charachter, often cycling around with a
greyhound following behind.
Lou often talked about his poaching days and different things he got
involved in, if I remember correctly Lou was in a national paper after he
adopted a couple of foxes and reared them like dogs.

I Lived in Lakenheath back in the latter part of the sixties with my sister Linda Chawner. She bred Boxers and Bloodhounds in Wings Road. We were good friends with Arthur France and his sister Joan who lived in Wingfield Road and Queenie and Fred. Also Maggie Bradshaw who had boarding kennels. We remember Lou very well. When my brother-in-law had a bad car crash Lou would often leave a rabbit on the doorstep to help out. One time he acquired a moped which he rode around for quite a while. One day he turned up without it and when asked where it was he said it wouldn't go any more because it was broken so he had thrown it in a ditch. After some careful questioning it turned out that he didn't know he had to put petrol in the tank! Would love to hear about or from anyone who remembers the Chawners.

I just want to post a huge public Thank You to the base for organising Rush Hour traffic police to take the traffic through. People are always quick to complain, but not to praise. The road is now perfectly passable thanks to those police officers standing there doing quite a probably boring and stressful job. It is so very much appreciated. I ride a motorbike, so it does not particularly bother me, but the possible dangers in overtaking a mile of traffic is now gone for me. Thanks.

Thanks for the opportunity to place a message on the Board. Our e-mail is fulabull@onetel.net.uk and we are Brendan & Margaret Fulham. We have only just found the web site via an ex-Lakenheathen(!) living in the States. I certainly will be telling friends about the site who have been stationed here at Lakenheath and Mildenhall. It would be nice to hear from people who may wish to have an update about the area, or who generally just want to talk about old times.
As a young Electrician I worked on both Bases and my wife Margaret worked at the NCO Club for a number of years prior to our marriage and family. We still stay in touch with, and sometimes visit, friends in the States who have very fond memories of the area. If anyone wants to contact us please tell them they may do so.

What a wonderful, professional, informative site!
First thing I saw was a letter asking for any info on a man from the village in the '60's. A relative of mine! The photos are lovely, brought a tear to my eye, (I live in New York), and the war stuff is great. I know Rutterfords and Flacks and these stories are all familiar.
Keep up the good work, post more photos and I, also, would like to see a visitors sign-in page.
Thanks.

Dear Editor,
First, let me commend you on a job well done! I have enjoyed looking through your pages on Lakenheath.
My father was stationed at Lakenheath AFB from 1966 through 1968/69. I was nine years old when we arrived in Lakenheath from the US. I have such wonderful memories of Lakenheath and the countryside around it!
I am writing in regards about an old a fellow I remember quite distinctively by the name of "Lou" who was from the village of Lakenheath in hopes someone may have known him or of him.
Lou had ponies and he would bring these ponies to the "base" for "us" American kids to ride for a small fee. A couple of my girlfriends and I were "horse smart" and he would let us ride the ponies for free as we helped him with the other children. He always came through the fields from the village to the base and "hardly" ever took the road! We would meet him halfway and help him bring the ponies to the field on base where we rode them. We would then help him take them halfway back through the field once finished riding. I believe he would stay for two to four hours depending on how many children came to ride.
I cannot remember Lou's last name and I am not sure we even knew it! I recall he was an older, small wiry man. Kind of "scruffy" and he smelled like his ponies!! He was a Most Likable fellow!! Very good to us American kids and he became our friend. We looked forward to Lou's visits!
Would love to hear from anyone who may have known of Lou and his ponies!!
Kind Regards,
Tamra (Burnett) Lillich

Dear Editor,
You asked that if I received any replies to my letter regarding Lou that you would be interested in knowing. Below is a reply I received two days ago. I was thrilled! I can now put a last name to our "beloved" Lou! I have asked Coral if it would be OK to post her reply on your site if you wished to do so. She said that is would be just fine! Thank you for posting my letter!! What a small world it is!
Kind Regards,
Tamra
Dear Tamra,
Lou Flack was my great uncle. I, also, was 9 years old in 1966. I think you knew him better than I did, I never really had much to do with him.
He was "different" from the norm, didn't have a real job, no-one ever knew quite where he got the horses, he hung out with "yanks", probably because they saw the good qualities in him. They all seemed to love him, he was great friends with some real "brass" on the base. He loved kids and horses.
I don't have many memories of him, but I do remember one bitterly cold winter, going to my great-grandmother's house where he lived, and there was a grateful horse sitting by the warmth of the fireplace!!!
Lou passed away a few years ago, and, of course, I'm sorry now I didn't know him better. He was a man of true character and compassion, and anyone who loves animals more than people is ok in my book!
I was amazed when I saw your letter, I now live in New York and am thrilled with the Lakenheath web-site. I moved here when I was 20 and with maturity comes a need for a stronger link to my roots. Thanks for making my day!

Dear Editor,
Over recent months I have been wondering whether someone was going to produce a site for Lakenheath and now you have. It is a great start and it is always interesting to read up on local issues. May I suggest perhaps the incorporation of a guestbook, allowing us all to get a feel of who locally is visiting the site. Once again congratulations!! Look forward to further additions.
Jim
